New Avengers (2010 series) #26

The Phoenix Force came to Earth centuries before the Marvel era. Last issue in the hidden city of K'un Lun Yu-Ti, the August Personage In Jade, saw its arrival in a prophetic dream and sought out half-breed red-haired girl Fongji Wu who never speaks to become the Iron Fist to oppose it.

Now Yu-Ti has sent a minion Chan Kong-San to recruit Leonardo da Vinci to help them. Leonardo can't resist a challenge.

Now we see Fongji Wu with Yu-Ti in front of a martial arts class led by Lei Kung, the Thunderer. Yu-Ti tells her to attack him. She doesn't move until he taunts her about her father being from the outside world. He easily evades her rush and the other students laugh. Lei Kung admonishes them but suggests she leave. However she pulls his dagger from its scabbard, kicks him in the jaw and lunges at Yu-Ti with it. He dodges again but grips her wrist making her drop the weapon. He tells her she must learn to control her anger and fight like a warrior, not an animal. And he leaves her to Lei Kung's training.

Leonardo arrives at the hidden city much later and sees Fongji Wu's training in progress. She's bruised but defiant, but can't lay a hand or foot on Lei Kung. He calls for the Tiger Claw move but she keeps doing other stuff. Eventually she gives in and tries the Tiger Claw, but that fails as well. But for the 1st time her anger erupts in a blazing Phoenix image which bowls her teacher over. But she faints from the toll it takes.

Da Vinci recruits the students to build a gigantic telescope from his design with which to predict the Phoenix Force's arrival. Yu-Ti takes Fongji to the pool that is the Scrying Vessel of Bo-Ling. She empties her mind and a sphere of water rises up and they see images of a bird of fire and a dragon.

Yu-Ti, Lei Kung and Leonardo send her into the cave of the dragon Shou Lao where she will battle it to gain the power of Iron Fist. 2 days later she emerges with that power, and speaks for the 1st time to thank Yu-Ti.

Da Vinci's telescope sees the Phoenix Force passing the Moon.
