Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #37 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

In Norway, the fishing boat captain gathers a following and they surround a fire and the captain walks into it to summon their leader….

In Asgard, Heimdall senses something hidden that he cannot see. Meanwhile, Cyra the physician begs Odin to let her treat Thor’s burn injuries but Odin denies her, saying that Thor has chosen the ways of Midgard and that he must find his own solution. They then encounter Uatu the Watcher who tells them of a portentous moment. They know of Tarene and her destiny to elevate man to the next step on the evolutionary scale. But this future is threatened: Watcher shows Odin the Destroyer, animated by Tarene’s spirit, defeating Thor with Loki the schemer behind the action. This will lead to the Reigning: a corrupted Thor becoming absolute ruler of Earth, ushering in a period of degradation…and this future will come to pass if Thor defeats the Destroyer….

On Earth, Thor is reluctant to fight the Destroyer lest he harm Tarene but she is powerless to keep from fighting Thor, her powers augmenting the already mighty strength of the armor….

In the Underworld, Karnilla the Norn Queen dreams of her beloved Balder becoming Prince of Asgard after Thor is defeated…unaware that Loki is plotting to seize power for himself….

As Tarene helplessly continues to smash Thor, Odin also looks on, aware that Thor would choose death rather than endangering Tarene. Thor recalls that once before, he used Mjolnir to cast the Destroyer into another dimension but the giant armor easily wrests the hammer from him, being a creation of Odin, proceeding to beat the Thunder God with his own weapon. Sif intervenes and is likewise clobbered. The false Keith Kincaid approaches Jane Foster and asks her to get to safety; she runs into the hospital to try to summon the Avengers. Marnot spots Kincaid and announces he knows the man’s true identity. Kincaid pushes Marnot into an alley and strangles him to death. The dead Asgardian transforms into Odin’s pet raven, Hescamar….

Thor, done with watching the Destroyer’s violent rampage, leaps on his back to try to wrest Mjolnir back. Sif joins the battle but they are both defeated. Destroyer strikes Thor in the head, then stands over him victoriously….

In Norway, the group standing around the flames watch as Surtur arrives….

Thor (1998 series) #37 Review by (December 9, 2025)

Review: The battle between Thor and the Destroyer continues and things are much more exciting, thanks to Jim Starlin’s crisply detailed art. There’s really not much to the story, just a battle while everyone worries about Tarene’s safety. We are finally given the details of the Reigning, the future incident that Zarrko has been worrying about and now we learn that it was been weighing on Odin’s mind and now the Watcher enters to offer some unnecessary pressure. And we are also laying groundwork for upcoming tales of Surtur and the phony Keith Kincaid.

Comments: Part two of three parts. First appearance of Cyra, Asgardian physician, who returns in #39-41. Final appearance of Marnot. Letters by Richard Starkings, Comicraft, and Wes Abbott.
