Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #47 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Thor leads his warriors out against the invading Frost Giants, while Balder worries that the King should be back safely in the palace and not risking his life in battle. But Thor considers this the real place of a leader, out protecting his realm from harm….

EMT Jake Olson is summoned to the high school where he learns that Thor Girl was petrified and smashed by the Grey Gargoyle. Jake asks Amanda Fairmont to help him collect the pieces of the fallen heroine. When asked why by a police officer, he responds, “At the very least, it’s for the funeral….”

In a hotel room, the Grey Gargoyle examines Thor Girl’s stolen hammer, wondering if this is the device which will finally grant him the immortality he desires. To test it, he leaps out of the window and falls to the street yet this proves nothing as he would normally have survived such a fall. So he blasts a hot dog stand with it and is pleased, then he uses it to fly and is convinced he is a god…

Jake takes the fragments of Tarene to Avengers Mansion, seeking help but Jarvis does not recognize him or believe his claims to be Thor so he denies him entrance. Jake then goes to Plan B which is the Enchantress, who already knows the backstory. He drives over to her apartment and breaks in, calling for Amora. His attention is drawn to the magic mirror and he puts his hand in to discover the surface is liquid and he sees his reflection as Thor...who is currently in the snowy outskirts of Asgard unleashing the Odinpower on his giant enemies…when Jake steps through the mirror and emerges on the other side as Thor…which causes the real Thor to feel a sudden loss of power. Amora feels the disturbance of magic and sees Jake transformed into Thor and determines to solve the conundrum before it gets any more complicated…and then she sees the coming of Desak the God-Slayer….

Thor takes a beating from the Frost Giants who mock him but then Amora comes to his aid, sending an illusion of the God of Thunder to distract the giants while she encourages Thor to rest. But Thor refuses, insisting he and his troops must battle to the death, which strikes the warriors as an admission that Thor’s mission is without a point. But lacking his full strength, Thor is soundly beaten by the giants….

Back in New York, Jake/Thor finds he can’t open a portal to Asgard but a radio news report encourages him to seek out the Grey Gargoyle as a possible means of putting Tarene back together. Jake/Thor confronts GG and aims a blast from his hammer at him but it does no harm to the villain as it is only about 10% of its usual strength. And then Desak arrives, demanding to know the whereabouts of Tarene, the Designate, before he kills the two of them….

Thor (1998 series) #47 Review by (March 10, 2026)

Review: Once we get past that cover with the smug and punchable face of the Grey Gargoyle, the story settles down into a serious drama. Narrated by ex-Thor Jake Olson whose confusion puts a different spin on the hero’s usual adventures, the tale places Thor in great danger. While Jake was running around trying to discover what to do with the Tarene fragments and Thor was off pounding giants, everything seemed okay—it’s when we had two Thors with diminished powers that everything goes bad. And with Desak on the scene, it’s about to get worse. Guest penciler Joe Bennett fills in nicely, giving everything a solid look, ably enhanced by the bright 90s colors. Very nice.

Comments: Thor and Jake Olson were separated by Odin in issue #39. Jack Jadson contributed to the inking. Letters by Comicraft and Richard Starkings.
