Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #63 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

At a high school in the Northeastern United States, Trent Skoglund heads home with his girlfriend Virginia, pondering life after high school, college or working as a fisherman? He goes home to find his Aunt Mary, a nun, visiting. Trent asks his dad Lars about the day’s fishing and Lars tells him it was great. But things weren’t great, the seas are all fished out of lobsters; Mary asks why he lied to his son but Lars doesn’t want to dump grown up problems on him. He is determined, somehow, to get money to send Trent to college….

Aunt Mary visits Trent in his room, warning him that life can be unpredictable. Case in point: Thor's rule over Earth; she finds it disturbing. When he claimed he was a god with the Avengers it seemed like an act but now he is using it to justify everything he does….

In church, the priest preaches against Thor as an affront to the One True God. Outside, Lars asks banker Charles if they can get together to talk over the financial situation soon. His wife asks for twenty dollars for the bake sale but Lars only has five….

The next day, as he prepares to take his boat out or another fruitless trip, Lars is approached by his friend Lloyd Cullen, who introduces him to visitor Willie Lawson; they are both Thor-worshippers and hope they can get Lars to join the faith. Lars pleads his lifelong Catholicism and begs off, going out to sea. He checks his 84 traps and they are all empty. Lars meets with Charles at the bank about a loan but he is turned down, the Board of Directors forbidding loans to lobstermen as they will never get their money back. He goes home and shares his troubles with his sister Mary, he has hit bottom and there is no prospect for any relief; Mary tells him to have faith. Unaware of the situation, Trent asks for money to take Virginia to the prom; Mary gives it to him.

Lars takes his boat out the next day, pondering the possibility of killing himself so that the insurance will help his family over their financial difficulties. And suddenly Thor appears in the sky and fills the sea with lobsters. Lars is saved.

At home, Lars ponders Thor and Christ and heads toward the church of Thor where they are praising their god for having restored the lobsters. Lars clutches a cross and hesitates outside of their door….

Thor (1998 series) #63 Review by (August 4, 2026)

Review: A domestic calamity is reversed by Thor and a fishing industry and the towns supported by it are saved. And so Lars questions his Catholic faith. But we’ve seen this before: “How does the true existence of the Norse Gods affect the current religions?” a question that has never been asked in real life and never will, no matter how much thought a comic book writer wants to put into it. The story is intense and moving but what purpose does Dan Jurgens have in raising religious issues that literally can’t be answered? Not a clue.
