Thor #2 Review by (June 27, 2018)

Review: The story continues with Jason Aaron's comic banter among the heroes and Mike Del Mundo's impressionistic painted art; nothing big and dramatic yet just an interesting story rolling along. And, as usual, Aaron allows a letterer to shine, this time Joe Sabino.

Comments: Title sounds like an old-time western adventure. Karnilla was killed in battle in THOR (2017 series) #700; everyone else in Hel has been dead for a very long time by comics reckoning.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Prologue: a mysterious prisoner rides a train along the Helway, threatened by fire goblin guards....

In Hel, Thor is reunited with his deceased brother Balder the Brave and Skurge the Executioner. Suddenly, they are attacked by firepedes piloted by goblins. Balder in his monster truck and Thor in his boat try to escape but the bad guys are too swift. Turning the piloting of his boat to the goat Toothgrinder, Thor and his murder dog Thori fight the goblins; as Thor's hammer starts to melt from the goblin blood he summons another which hits Loki in the head and splits in two for the Thunder God to wield against his enemies. Karnilla the (late) Norn Queen arrives on the scene to dispatch the last of their foes, followed by Tyr. They report to Balder that they were unable to find the secret meeting place of Sindr Queen of Cinders, and the faction leaders of the dead in Hel....

At the meeting the Queen suggests the tribal chieftains to join her cause. Any who balk are burned or decapitated and the others throw in their lot with the Queen of Muspelheim, promised the rule of Niflheim after Balder is overthrown....

Thor and his assembled allies try to lay plans for the battle but Karnilla and Skurge do not trust Loki and plan to kill him; Thor, with a covert threat to the God of Mischief takes responsibility for Loki. Loki later secretly warns Thor that they can't trust Tyr. Having heard that the Queen of Cinders has a new secret weapon being delivered by train, the band makes plans to capture it. They destroy the bridge ahead of the train sending it crashing into a river—and who should arise from the river but Hela, Goddess of Death and Fenris Wolf....
