Story Name:

The Woman with the Vibranium Gun

Synopsis

Thor (2018 series) #9 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Roz Solomon responds to a call for help from Roxxon's evil CEO Dario Agger whose conscience was finally bothering him after being partners with Malekith. Now that she's there, however, he denies everything....

Flashback: Roz Solomon was recruited by Black Panther as an Agent of Wakanda and was given an orientation by Okoye. This new organization is to be a network of secret agents supporting the Avengers; she is issued a suit of body armor, a flying car, and a Vibranium gun....

On her first mission she discovered a Dark Elf terrorist cell in Queens; they have their own Black Bifrost and bring through a Frost Giant. As she battles the giant singlehandedly, she makes a quick call to Jane Foster asking how to defeat a giant. Jane's advice is to call Thor.....

A few days earlier she was at Avengers Mansion, brooding over her traumatic experiences in Broxton; she wants to talk to Thor about it but he's busy having a romantic interlude with She-Hulk, leaving Roz alone....

While battling the giant, Roz is seized by a troll (and she is unnerved by the memory of having killed 17 trolls in Broxton); she summons her flying car which bursts in with missiles blazing, taking out the troll and the elves. She uses the limited teleportation ability of the car to transport her and the Frost Giant to the Lut Desert in Iran, where the heat slowly kills the giant as she questions him. Thor finally arrives to find the giant dead, and is surprised at how cold and grim Roz has become....

Present: Roz wants Agger to reveal what he knows about Malekith but the bad guy refuses. As she leaves, she toys with the idea of killing him but her killing of the trolls weighs on her mind. After she is gone, Ulik arrives to summon Agger to a meeting with Malekith. They step through the Black Bifrost to Svartalfheim where we see the Serpent (Cul Borson), undercover as a bad guy, reporting what he sees back to Odin....

Review / Commentaries

Thor (2018 series) #9 Review by (January 9, 2019)

Review: And we get an issue focusing on an underappreciated character viz. Roz Solomon. The SHIELD environmental expert, we are told, has been suffering under the burden of guilt after killing a bunch of trolls in Broxton. This didn't really come up before (or am I just forgetting?) but it gives the normally light-hearted Roz something to brood over. On the other hand, her Agent scenes are played for fun, her orientation by Okoye and her call to Jane while fighting the giant. The overall effect is to surprise as (as it did Thor) to find out how she has changed since her first appearance.

Comments: Like most comics this week, the cover features a bannered tribute to Stan Lee in place of the comics logo. Title is a parody of the James Bond novel/movie title THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN. Roz's traumatic adventure in Broxton took place in THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #19-24. Cameos by Ka-Zar and Gorilla-Man as fellow Agents of Wakanda.
