Dazed and confused, the Hulk finds himself inside a sewage drain in the Hudson River in New Jersey (note: He arrived back to Earth unexpectedly from the microscopic world of his love Jarella, see last issue, Incredible Hulk #156). Though his memories are vague, he feels a loss in his heart. Hulk ventures forth, unaware that he is being observed by a mysterious presence orbiting the planet in a spacecraft called Omnivac. The presence sends out a shuttle toward our world.
Meanwhile, on Project Greenskin base, New Mexico, Betty Ross and Major Glenn Talbot rehearse their upcoming wedding ceremony (!) Guest Jim Wilson can’t help but feel like he is betraying Bruce Banner. Making up excuses, he gets on the first plane back to Jersey.
In an institution on the West coast, a mysterious force awakens a John Doe patient from his comma, who later escapes. A shuttle picks up the man, and taken to Omnivac where the Leader awaits! And that comma patient was the Rhino! The Leader transfers his mind into the Rhino, taking full control over the strongman.
In Jersey, Hulk takes his sadness out off the Hudson River and rampages on the bridge. Fortunately, Jim finds him on time to soothe the monster, turning into Bruce Banner. But it’s not long before the Rhino shows up, and the Hulk is back!
Hulk and the Rhino (controlled by the Leader) battle destroying a factory works until the Rhino escapes in a shuttle, tricking the Hulk into following him (against Jim’s advice.) Jim alerts General Thunderbolt Ross of the Hulk’s presence. Ross holds the Hulk’s return info from his daughter Betty.
