Synopsis

Ultimates #9 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4.5 stars
This issue's catchup page has Philip Nelson Vogt telling us how he and his Troubleshooters are monitoring the Ultimates. Recently (Free Comic Book Day 2016: Civil War II) they and War Machine (James Rhodes) went up against Thanos. They won but Jim Rhodes died. They had been forewarned about the Mad Titan by the new Inhuman precog Ulysses. The superhuman community is divided over following his predictions. Now he had predicted the Hulk killing many heroes and then Hawkeye killed Bruce Banner to stop it happening (CWII#3).

But we go back to Machu Picchu in 1998 where we find Dr Adam Brashear and his son Dr Kevin Brashear. Kevin has a very big gun which he can carry because of anti-grav units in it. They're here to deal with the 2nd manifestation of the Infinaut whose mass alone would be enough to destroy the Earth. Kevin will aim the gun but Adam will energise it with his superpower (if he's recovered enough from Doktor Skorpion's Shadow Ray). Gravity goes wild as the Infinaut starts to materialise from somewhere. If they shoot too soon the energy will pass though him, but if they wait too long the Earth will die. They fire and the invader fades away. Adam says it worked like it did the 1st time.

Now we have Vogt recording his notes on the subject. The Infinaut has returned several times since 1998, sometimes given different names like the Macro-Beast and the Omnivader. His apps are preceded by ripples in spacetime which give 10 hours warning, enough time to repel him. But 8 days ago Ulysses predicted his next arrival and the Ultimates were notified. Troubleshooter Jessup is watching their preparations ...

... which are happening in Boston's Fenway Park baseball stadium. Their ally Raz Malhotra, the new Giant-Man, has helped Adam build a large Pym Particle accelerator. But Adam is more concerned about Hawkeye 'executing' Bruce Banner on the basis of Ulysses' prediction. Carol Danvers says she's unhappy about Clint Barton's action but she's glad the Hulk rampage was avoided. He wants her assurance that something like that won't happen again, but she dodges the question by answering that Clint will face trial and then justice. America Chavez detects the spacetime ripples that herald the Infinaut's approach. T'Challa checks the vibranium couplings and reminds Raz that the Wakandan Kimoyo OS added to his costume will help him guide the power flow. But Monica Rambeau as Spectrum will regulate the electricity flow by becoming 1 with it. Ulysses watches with amazement as the Ultimates work as a team without a leader.

The Infinaut arrives in his 9th manifestation. They now see clearly that it is an extremely large humanoid in some sort of spacesuit. Giant-Man grows bigger than ever to match him. Blue Marvel tells U that he himself has stopped such manifestations 6 times before. But this time with more warning from U they've set up a method of guiding him in safely. GM grabs the alien's hand. While Black Panther monitors progress the team manages to reduce the interloper to human size so that his mass doesn't severely damage the Earth.

T'Challa makes a welcoming speech and the Infinaut's translation software quickly allows him to respond warmly. Adam realises that he's another scientist and explorer, and that now they can learn from each other. And he tells Ulysses that this time he did good.

Epilogue 1:- Vogt gets a visit from his Troubleshooter agent Col Terry Jessup who can travel as undetectable psi-energy and can also read minds. He's been watching the Ultimates and reports their success with the Infinaut but that there's a deep rift in the team over Ulysses.

Epilogue 2:- Conner Sims (Anti-Man) is in his cell deep below the Ultimates' Triskelion HQ continuing to moan that there's a cage around the universe, but he never actually mentions the jailer, the "1 who is 1". However a voice in his head now commiserates with him, and we see it is Thanos communicating mentally from his own cell - and he wants to know everything that Conner saw outside the Omniverse.

Ultimates #9 Review by (November 9, 2024)
Djibril Morissette-Phan is the peniciller/inker for the opening flashback and Vogt page and the closing epilogues.

We don't have any details of the 1st manifestation of the Infinaut, which Adam Brashear says he repelled. The 1998 2nd attempted manifestation is documented in the flashback here and the 9th attempt in the body of the issue, so there were 6 other attempts in between. Vogt says that the being was sometimes given other names like the Macro-Beast and the Omnivader. We don't have any details about those 2. But in #6 of Al Ewing's Mighty Avengers Adam received an alert that the Macronaut had tried to land in Quezon City but was driven off by the Triumph Division. And in this issue Brashear claims to have been involved in 6 of the 8 previous 'invasions'.
So this issue contains the only 2 actual apps of Infinaut so far. But fear not, he will be significant in later Ultimates issues.

The opening Adam & Kevin Brashear 1998 fb fits between other dated exploits of the pair listed in Mighty Avengers vol 2 #9. In 1987 they contended with Doktor Skorpion and his Dream Machine, which seems to be different from the Shadow Ray mentioned in this fb. In 1999 they dealt with a Millenium Bug created by the Technocracy (who they'd previously fought in 1983). Following that, while the Fantastic Four were handling the 1st attack by Galactus in FF#48-50, they stopped DrSk again - this time from using technology left behind by Rama-Tut (in FF#19) to mine Neutronium from the Neutral Zone. Skorpion disintegrated but Kevin got lost in the NZ.

Adam tried to rescue Kevin from the NZ in MAv#8-9 and Captain America & MAv#7. But we met him as a cosmic being in our #4.

Meanwhile Evald Skorpion was revived as the Neohedron by the Maker in 2015's Avengers #0.

In my Comments last issue I left the Ultimates at the end of Civil War II #2 where Iron Man had kidnapped Ulysses from the Inhumans because of the death of Jim Rhodes (and the Inhumans retaliated by destroying Stark Tower). Since then Captain Marvel and Black Panther have been part of the 1st 'half' (ie flashback elements) of CWII#3 where a gang of superheroes go to arrest Bruce Banner for something Hulk hasn't done yet but Hawkeye kills him with a special arrow, and then gives himself up. America Chavez, Blue Marvel and Spectrum weren't involved in that. Since then the team apart from BM have been caught up in the war between IM and the Inh in Uncanny Inh #12-13. And Carol Danvers fell out with Jessica Drew over the Clint Barton situation in Spider-Woman #11.

After this issue the team will have lots of time to kill before the 2nd 'half' (ie the non-FB bits) of CWII#3 which covers Hawkeye's trial. In the gap:-
Phil Coulson opposes CM in Agents Of SHIELD #8.
The team attend Rhodey's funeral in Captain America: Sam Wilson #10 and CWII: Choosing Sides #2.
CM attends Bruce Banners funeral in the 1st half of The Fallen 1-shot.
CM/Sp lead some heroes to stop a prediction of Power Man causing a mass breakout from Ryker's and wind up causing it themselves in PM & Iron Fists #7-9.
The team fight Dr Minerva in CM#7 and then BP is part of Alpha Flight's Board Of Governors who grill CM over Rhodey's death and other stuff.
Spectrum and others confront Kingpin in CWII:K#1.
CM helps defeat Fin Fang Foom in All-New Wolverine #9 but then U predicts to her and BP in #10 that Old Man W will kill Gabby Kinney.
In CM#8 the team, especially BP, help her forestall various predicted crises.
Then its's time for Hawkeye's trial.

Raz Malhotra is here after his semi-regular apps in Astonishing Ant-Man, which series has now finished. He'll next turn up in the Secret Empire event.

Thanos appeared at the end of Unworthy Thor #2 between #8 and here. He was visited in his cell by a hooded figure (who we would learn later is Hela) who wants his help, but he asks for a 'tribute' in return. In the rest of that mini-series we learn that she wanted his help to retake Hel from Thor's sister Angela. But 1st she has to use his minions Black Swan and Proxima Midnight to get for him the hammer of the Ultimate Universe Thor. They fail so he doesn't help her.
