Vision and the Scarlet Witch #4 Review by (November 10, 2020)

Review: Final family value: so, who is Wanda and Pietro’s father anyway? Surprise! It’s Magneto, setting up a major conflict until the whole thing was retconned in 2015’s AXIS event, presumably to take Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver out of the world of the X-Men (movie rights owned by Fox) and set them squarely in with the Avengers (movie rights owned by Marvel). Why they then immediately killed Quicksilver in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, leaving him for Fox to put into a couple of their X-Men films is a question for another time. So, this account is quite moving as it humanizes one of Marvel’s premiere villains while allowing for some action scenes, especially the white pilgrim’s ruckus at Bova’s cottage. And I believe Bova is one of the most underappreciated Marvel supporting characters. And so the Marvel Universe changes for a few decades until another retcon rolls down.

Comments: Baby Luna was born in FANTASTIC FOUR #240; this is her third appearance. Modred the Mystic was driven mad in AVENGERS #185-187. Brief cameo by a purple Lockjaw. Ian Akin and Brian Garvey share the inking chores.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Vision and the Scarlet Witch #4 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

A pilgrim dressed in white ascends Mount Wundagore to show up at the cottage of Bova Ayrshire, midwife and help for wayward travelers. She tells the pilgrim not to worry about the mad Modred the Mystic and sees to his comfort. She tells him of a woman named Magda, fleeing her husband, who gave birth to twins and then vanished into the night. The pilgrim is Magda’s terrifying husband and he demands to know what happened to the children, threatening Bova and ripping the cabin apart with a wave of his hands. She reveals the children’s names as Wanda and Pietro; the pilgrim wrecks the rest of the cottage and flies off. Bova pleads with mad Modred to send a warning to the children, which he does….

The warning reaches Attilan, the Inhumans’ city on the moon, just as Scarlet Witch and Vision arrive to seek help for Vision’s mutilated arm (see issue #2). Well, it’s an easy fix as it’s whole again in the next panel. Quicksilver and Wanda reveal that they have both had premonitions of danger but keep quiet as Wanda sees Crystal and the new Baby Luna. And, moving beyond his prejudice, Pietro allows Vision to hold the baby. But then the white pilgrim arrives in Attilan and, invisible, he seals off Pietro and Crystal’s tower home. The other Inhumans (Black Bolt, Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon) are unable to enter and those inside are unable to leave. The white pilgrim enters and reveals himself to be Magneto, surprising the heroes more than the readers. Magneto insists he means no harm but there is a scuffle with the others until the baby starts to cry. Magneto claims the baby as his granddaughter, revealing himself to be Wanda and Pietro’s father. He has lived a hard life and had to become a hard man to survive but he has been reassessing his values and he is softening now that his granddaughter is homo sapiens. He humbly asks acceptance of Wanda and Pietro…his children….
