Weapons of Mutant Destruction: Alpha #1 Review by (April 28, 2020)

Review: And here we see the dark underbelly of the Weapon X program—not that the killer cyborgs with human hosts weren’t dark enough but the combination of Stryker’s fanaticism and Alba’s cold inhumanity lends a chilling personal grimness to the Project. And the heroes seem to be up for the project with Amadeus and Logan uncovering the leads in a stroke of genius—but we know what Amadeus doesn’t: that most of the team can’t be trusted, not even Logan who is playing Amadeus and Lady D against each other. Very nicely put together issue, as expected from Greg Pak.

Weapons of Mutant Destruction: Alpha #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Story continues from WEAPON X #4.

A pizza driver delivers to a secret facility in Serenity Hills, Texas, heading further and further into the building with his pizzas—but he can go no further than the Red Level and in the center of that is the Weapon X lab, headed by Dr. Alba….

Old Man Logan contacts Kitty Pryde, current leader of the X-Men, warning her about Weapon X’s new killer cyborgs, telling her to use Cerebra to watch over mutants. He declines her help in dealing with the problem at the source. He heads into the next room aboard the Olympus Group Transport and finds Lady Deathstrike and Sabretooth; without a warning he attacks them both, explaining that they all need to keep on their guards against the deadly cyborgs that can mimic any human form. Sabretooth opines that Warpath and Domino aren’t up to the demands, so the former hurls a knife at him: Creed ducks but Domino ricochets a bullet off the knife in midair that hits Creed between the eyes. Sabretooth than accepts them as part of the team and suggests that Amadeus Cho, the Totally Awesome Hulk, can be ditched since he isn’t a killer. Logan points out that he’s a super-genius and they need him. Amadeus shows them that he has regrown the face of the cyborg whose skeleton he recovered and identified the human host (David Andrews), a lead in tracking down the baddies. Logan points out the stasis formula the cyborg was grown in and suggests they search for who has purchased a lot of it; Amadeus traces it to a company called Omnitek in Oklahoma that was producing the chemical illegally. Logan sends Amadeus and Lady D to find David Andrews’ family while he and the rest check out the chemical company. He tells Amadeus and Lady D separately that he needs them to keep and eye on the other….

Logan, Sabretooth, Warpath, and Domino break into the deserted Omnitek facility and are attacked by cyborg cats; fighting them off, they find shipping manifests, leading them to the names of customers who bought the fluid….

In Youngstown, Ohio, Amadeus and Lady D find the Andrews home and put David’s mother to sleep while they search. They uncover a book by Rev. William Stryker and a phone which gives them the name of another son (Bobby) and a film clip of the mother killing the pet cat to punish the kid. This last shakes Amadeus up but Lady D knows that people can be much, much worse, like the ones they are looking for….

At the Weapon X facility, Rev William Stryker persuades a young man that he is needed for the crusade against the devil and his mutants, working him into a state of zeal before sending him to the lab. Dr Alba tells Stryker that they need more than volunteers to make their quotas and that their mental state is immaterial. Stryker vehemently disagrees, insisting each volunteer must be spiritually ready for the task. Alba goes to the lab and tases the young man and has him dropped into a vat before ordering pizza.…

Story continues in TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #20.
