After his battle with the Vulture last issue, Spider-Man lies unconscious in the street, while Captain Stacy and the other police try to keep the crowd back. Gwen goes to look for Peter but can’t find him anywhere. Captain Stacy tells his daughter to call him at the prison infirmary where they’re taking Spider-Man if she hears anything. Meanwhile, J. Jonah Jameson checks in on Joe Robertson, being checked on by a doctor after his minor injury last issue. Jonah gleefully tells Robbie that with Spider-Man in custody, it’ll only be a matter of time before he’s unmasked!

At the prison infirmary, Spider-Man is kept under heavy guard, while the commissioner orders he not be unmasked, seeking legal advice on the matter from Foggy Nelson. Spider-Man eventually comes to and realizes where he is, choosing to rest for the time being to regain his strength. Hours later, Captain Stacy is on the phone with Gwen, when he’s suddenly grabbed and taken hostage by some prisoners looking to escape! Spidey crawls out of bed and surveils the situation, before pretending that he wants to join the group! They don’t buy it, leading to a brief scuffle in which Spidey manhandles the prisoners. They threaten Captain Stacy and Spidey bluffs that it doesn’t bother him, which finally convinces the prisoners to let Spidey join.

Elsewhere, Harry Osborn combs the city looking for his missing father! He can’t get his father’s recent worries out of his head, even blowing off Mary Jane when she tries saying hi. Back at the prison, Spidey pretends to lead the jailbreak, playing things cautiously so that Captain Stacy doesn’t get hurt. Spidey separates from the group, under the pretense of looking for an escape route, and goes to look for the master fuse box. He finds the room and takes the opportunity to call Aunt May. He tells her that he’s okay but that he can’t tell her where he is, which only upsets her more! Spidey realizes calling was a mistake and destroys the fuse box, plunging the prison into darkness!

Spidey rejoins the group and uses the dark to take out the prisoners one by one. Eventually, there’s just one prisoner left, the one holding Captain Stacy. Spidey incapacitates the guy and frees Stacy, who says he’ll testify on Spidey’s behalf at his trial. Spidey cuts out, not wanting risk getting unmasked, and certainly not wanting to stay in prison until a trial. Captain Stacy still tells everyone that Spider-Man helped stop the jailbreak, to Jameson’s obvious disbelief. Spidey watches on, with absolutely no idea what he’s going to tell Aunt May!

Review / Commentaries

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #65 Review by (December 18, 2024)

Review: Spidey finds himself taking part in a jailbreak, in order to ultimately stop it! This was an okay issue, with only a couple of things of note. The main plot isn’t too interesting, with Spidey pretending to help the escaping prisoners, while they have Captain Stacy hostage. It goes about how you’d expect, Spidey gains their trust, cuts the lights, and takes them out in the dark. One odd side plot involves Harry looking for his dad, who’s gone missing. The odd part being that last time we saw Norman, he was with Harry, but the narration box makes it sound as if his being missing was an ongoing plot that we’re just getting back to. The most frustrating part of the issue comes when Spidey calls Aunt May from the prison to let her know he’s okay. He says he’s fine but that he blatantly can’t tell her where he is, which obviously only makes her worry more! This feels rather like manufactured tension, as Pete could have given any number of excuses for where he’s been, like developing photos or something. Sure, he doesn’t like to lie to her, but the whole situation felt a tad lazy.

Comments: Small guest appearance by Foggy Nelson.
