Mysterio swears his revenge on Spider-Man, after countless months of planning! He looks upon his miniature mock-up of an amusement park and readies his new secret weapon, for when he and Spider-Man next square off! Mysterio thinks back to being imprisoned after last facing off with Spider-Man. He bided his time, slowly accumulating the chemicals he needed to concoct a gas he used to escape prison. Mysterio then sets out to commit as public a crime as possible, in order to draw Spider-Man out! Spider-Man, meanwhile, recovers his clothes and camera from the rooftop where he fought the Vulture a couple of issues ago. He heads home but finds he can’t sleep, having far too many things to worry about, as usual.

Peter heads to the Daily Bugle to see J. Jonah Jameson, with no idea how he’s going to explain suddenly disappearing after the Vulture’s attack. Jameson is obviously furious and throws out Peter without even waiting for an explanation. However, Ned Leeds shows Jameson the worthless photos the staff photographer took, making Jonah even angrier than before! Peter dejectedly sells his motorcycle, for half what it cost him, figuring it’s the only way to raise some quick cash. Just after, Mysterio suddenly appears on the street but Peter frustratedly decides to let the police handle Mysterio, until he actually does something dangerous. Not long after, Peter is spotted by Gwen and the two joyously make up, elated to be back in each other’s lives and more in love than ever!

Meanwhile, Captain Stacy meets with Joe Robertson so that they can compare notes on Spider-Man. Both men feel Spider-Man is misunderstood and like he possibly knows them! Peter returns home to find Harry still stressing about his missing father. They head to the Osborn company, but are told that Harry’s father hasn’t been there in days. However, we see that Norman Osborn did find a way into his factory and he remembers that he’s the Green Goblin, with his other memories still slowly returning! Harry drops Peter off to see Aunt May, who Peter hears scream as soon as he arrives! Peter runs in to see that Mysterio has taken over the airwaves to issue a threat to destroy the city unless Spider-Man meets him where they first fought, for their final battle!

Peter leaves Aunt May with Anna Watson, so he can head out as Spidey. He heads to the abandoned studio building where they first fought and finds Mysterio waiting for him. Mysterio unleashes his signature smoke and starts to barrage Spidey in the confusion. Spidey jumps to the ceiling to escape and lunges for Mysterio, who entangles Spidey in his cape. This gives Mysterio the time he needs to blast Spidey with his secret weapon! The world spins around for Spider-Man and he lands on the ground, but when the smoke clears, he can hardly believe his eyes! Mysterio looms like a giant over Spidey, as he reveals that his weapon seemingly shrunk Spidey to only six inches tall and he must now fight for his life through the amusement park mock-up! To be continued!

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #66 Review by (December 26, 2024)

Review: There’s a surprising amount going on in this issue, with a very memorable main plot and several important side plots running at once. The main plot involves the return of my favorite Spidey villain, Mysterio, seemingly shrinking Spidey to only six inches tall! I’ve always found this to be one of Mysterio’s most memorable and classic stories, though most of the action occurs next issue. Still, what a way to leave off the issue! As mentioned, we also have several important side plots. First off, Pete and Gwen reunite finally, and are now more in love than ever! This particular bout of drama is over (though it obviously won’t be the last).

Secondly, Captain Stacy and Robbie meet to discuss Spider-Man. It’s pretty interesting, as the two men are pretty similar, both level-headed with the belief that Spider-Man is misunderstood and the inklings that they may know him. It should be noted though that one of them figures it out much sooner than the other (as far as we know). The most important side plot involves Norman Osborn remembering that he’s the Green Goblin, after several issues of his hazy memories plaguing him. This sets up his return as the Green Goblin in Spectacular Spider-Man #2 (a side series that only lasted those two issues). Since it happens in a separate series, that leaves a huge gap between his actual appearances as the Goblin in this series, which can be a bit jarring if you didn’t read Spectacular Spider-Man (which I hadn’t for many years).

Comments: Norman Osborn officially remembers that he’s the Green Goblin. His story will continue in the Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine #2.
