Avengers Unlimited Infinity Comic #58 Review by (May 11, 2024)
I don't believe Kate Bishop and Runa have met before in any published comic, never mind Runa rescuing Kate and America Chavez from ghost-earthworms. But then there are many untold tales in the Marvel universe.

Runa is a fairly new addition to Marvel's cast in the Return Of The Valkyries mini-series during the King In Black event. She had been trapped for millennia in the King's power source the Headless Celestial. Since then she's appeared in the Mighty Valkyries mini-series, the Jane Foster & Mighty Thor mini-series and some issues of the 2020 Thor series. Along the way she's cameoed in Alligator Loki Infinity Comic #1 and had her own tales in Marvel's Voices: Legacy (2022) and MV: Pride (2022).
I understand Runa was modelled on the Tessa Thompson Valkyrie in the films. (As was the Valkyrie in the 2018 Exiles series.)

Kate and Groot did cohabit some issues within the Civil War II event. We didn't see her damaging 1 of his branches but it might have happened off-panel. And anyway they were on opposite sides.
Publication-wise this issue appeared while Groot was transformed into the Grootfall Asteroids for the whole of Guardians Of The Galaxy vol 7. The Marvel Chronology Project haven't pieced together this era yet.

Valkyries calling human PIs to Asgard seems to be a mini-trend. Valkyrie (Jane Foster) does it to Wasp in the Avengers Inc mini-series.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers Unlimited Infinity Comic #58 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) can't resist the opportunity to visit Asgard when the Valkyrie Runa asks her to help in an investigation, even though it's way out of her PI comfort zone. Besides she's owes Runa for saving her and America Chavez from some ghost-earthworms. Asgardians look at her askance as her guide leads her to the 1st of many crime scenes where objects made of Uru metal have been stolen. As she examines the room Kate finds traces of glowing slime. Then they visit Thor's bedroom from where he disappeared a few days ago along with his hammer Mjolnir and an axe, and Hawkeye finds more ooze.

Kate tries to phone a friend but Asgard doesn't get mobile reception. However Runa takes her to their communications centre where she contacts the tree-being Groot. But 1st she has to apologise to him for taking 1 of his branches to use as an arrow. He seems to accept her apology and she describes the goo to him. His 'groots' convey that he knows of a space parasite that eats Uru, and it likes cold, damp, dark places.

Runa now takes Kate to a nearby cave system where she swears to disembowel the creature if necessary to retrieve the sacred Asgardian objects. They come across a few of them lying around. Then there's a loud roar and they're confronted by Thor and his 2 weapons, but covered in glowing slime.
