Synopsis

Avengers Unlimited Infinity Comic #59 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Last issue Valkyrie (Runa) brought Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) to Asgard to investigate the disappearance of Thor and some objects mad of Uru metal. PI detective work plus consulting an expert suggested that an Uru-eating space parasite was the culprit. The duo tracked it to a dark cave system but were confronted by Thor wielding Mjolnir and an axe, and covered in the trademark slime of the parasite. And the Thunder God doesn't seem to be himself.

Thor's hand and gaping mouth projects tentacles to consume the hammer, so Hawkeye shoots an arrow through the hand making it drop it. Thor produces more tentacles from all over to attack the females with, so Valkyrie starts chopping them off. A tentacle knocks Kate into a chasm, followed by Runa who breaks an arm. From somewhere Val produces a rope to bind her arm up with and Hawkeye ties more of it to an arrow, shoots the arrow to the surface and climbs up the rope.

Thor is trying unsuccessfully to resist the parasite and manages to tell Kate to use a flaming torch which Runa dropped. She thrusts it at Thor and the dark/damp-loving space-thing screams as it escapes from his body. And screams again when he incinerates it with lightning. The body disintegrates leaving Asgard's sacred Uru objects unfortunately broken into pieces.

Runa climbs out of the hole to join them and they return to Asgard with the artefacts. Later the 3 celebrate their victory while some puzzle-loving Asgardians set about reconstructing the objects. Thor suggests Kate stay here as the only PI in Asgard. Runa agrees, and Kate is tempted.

Review / Commentaries

Avengers Unlimited Infinity Comic #59 Review by (May 11, 2024)
Thor's axe doesn't seem to be Jarnbjorn.

The Warriors Three including both Hildegarde and Volstagg are seen in the background at the victory celebration.

Runa has been seen since in Marvel Unleashed #4 (featuring various Marvel animals).

Kate Bishop has since had a few minor apps plus her own book(!) Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King.

For Thor these issues were published between the end (with an Annual) of the 2020 Thor series and the start of Immortal Thor. He was also doing Avenger-y stuff in their vol 9 and the Av: Beyond mini-series.
