Breakdown Part 1

Synopsis

Black Widow (2001 series) #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Yelena Belova, the second Black Widow, is kidnapped from her Moscow apartment and delivered to SHIELD headquarters in Manhattan. There, an operation is performed in which she switches bodies with Natasha Romanoff, the original Black Widow, though both Nick Fury and Daredevil are apprehensive. Phase two is next…

…and Belova awakens in Natasha’s body in Natasha’s apartment and is shocked when she sees herself in a mirror. Daredevil arrives and her instinct is to fight him but DD kisses her and refers to “last night,” surprising Belova. Monitoring the action, Nat (in Belova’s body) recognizes that Belova is terrified but likely wondering if this is some deep cover mission which she can’t quite remember. After DD leaves, “Natasha” searches the apartment and takes an automatic pistol and leaves. She makes a phone call which seems to confirm a mission and is directed to Times Square Station where she is given a bag with her orders and uniform; changing into Nat’s familiar costume, Belova learns she is to go to the Museum of Natural History and there assassinate…Yelena Belova….

At the Museum, Belova finds Natasha (impersonating Belova) who knows why she is there and starts a fight. Insisting she is Natasha Romanoff, Belova shoots her target down and is immediately surrounded by police with guns drawn….

Review / Commentaries

Black Widow (2001 series) #1 Review by (March 3, 2020)

Review: A gritty limited series with gritty painted art puts Yelena Belova through a hell of lost identity as part of a) a SHIELD mission to recover hidden nukes, which part of the plot never seems that big of a deal and b) Natasha’s mission to drive Belova away from the Red Room and her career as a spy/assassin. This is the real meat of the series and the issues are paced nicely so that the steps in this mission play out naturally (or as naturally as possible in a story about mind transfers) and the revelation of Nat’s goal seems both obvious and poignant. A nice mature entry in the dark and gritty Marvel Knights imprint.

Comments:Marvel Knights”--Cover. Sequel to BLACK WIDOW (1999). Written by Devin Grayson and Greg Rucka.
