Synopsis

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #14 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Sam Wilson returns home from the gym to a surprise birthday party. After a while, Misty Knight notices that Sam is sitting by himself and brooding about his partner Joaquin Torres, the Falcon. She encourages him to lighten up and join the party. Another guest suggests she take Sam to see the comedian Bobby Marx who makes fun of Captain America….

In Mohanda, scientist Tilda Johnson, the former Nightshade, is working on a cure for Joaquin; Prime Minister Sisulu reminds her that he may not want it….

At the Apollo Theater, Sam and his friends listen to the comedian Bobby Marx ridicule superheroes in general and Sam Cap in particular. Everyone laughs except Sam who seems quite uncomfortable….

In Arizona, Joaquin (the Falcon) Torres, now a vampire predator, thanks to the White Wolf, hunts his prey, a rabbit, then goes back to his abuelita’s home. Then, Sisulu and Tilda arrive with the cure. Later, he confides in his sister Luisa that he is afraid of losing the falcon powers along with the vampire ones; she asks about his constant pain and fatigue and he insists he can still be a hero even with those limitations….

At home, Sam is awoken by Redwing so he dons his Captain America uniform and flies out to Arizona. He and Joaquin have a talk atop a mesa, Joaquin asking Sam whether he should take the cure when it may mean the end to his powers. Sam suggests they go for a flight and they take off into the night….

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #14 Review by (June 28, 2023)

Review: An apparent finale centers on Joaquin Torres, the Falcon, whose story has been left hanging while the White Wolf and Cold War have occupied the main story for some time. And it’s nice, showing Sam’s concern for his partner and Joaquin’s fear of losing what makes him special. This emphasis on character as well as action (which this issue is short on) marks the best comics. Presumably all will be resolved in issue #750 or the forthcoming Cap finale.

Comments: Series concludes with CAPTAIN AMERICA #750. Issue includes a letter of appreciation from writer Tochi Onyebuchi. Steve Cap, Sharon Carter, and Black Panther are portrayed on the cover but none of them appear in the comic or are even mentioned. Protobunker’s Fer Sifuentes-Sujo is also credited as colorist.
