Captain America #290 Review by (March 8, 2015)
Comments: “Death of the Red Skull” part one; part two will be in issue #293. First appearance of Sinthea Schmidt, daughter of the Red Skull, appearing here as Mother Superior; her origin will be related in issue #298. First (brief) appearance of Black Crow, who returns in issue #292.

Review: An impressive cover for an issue which mainly serves to set up many plot threads of the subsequent issues. Ron Frenz offers some nice cinematic effects, especially on page 12 with the two villains fading into the distance as the heroes rush toward the front of the panels. And Steve and Bernie are cute together, the Wasp says so.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America #290 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

At Avengers Mansion, Captain America is thrilling his girlfriend Bernie Rosenthal with a display of his acrobatic abilities. They repair to the kitchen for breakfast where Wasp spies on them in miniature form, glad that Cap is finally allowing himself to be happy. On the way home he tells her about his most recent adventure.

Back at the apartment, Jack (Nomad) Monroe is having a nightmare of Captain America suddenly aging into an elderly man; he confides his fears to Steve when he comes home. The two don their hero costumes and head across the rooftops for their nightly patrol. They are watched by a mysterious man who is startled to see a black-cloaked woman levitating toward him; Mother Superior tears off the man’s mask to reveal the scarred visage of Baron Helmut Zemo. She entices him on accompanying her through the skies….

Cap and Nomad arrive at Sam Wilson’s home and are met by the Falcon, who is still recovering from losing the election. They spy a kid trying to break into an apartment and Cap goes over to scare the kid straight. Elsewhere, Arnie Roth is having a nightmare of his late boyfriend Michael rising from the grave a grisly monster; he awakens to see Mother Superior and Baron Zemo entering; she puts him to sleep again so that when Cap and buddies arrive, he assumes it was a dream. Outside the two villains head to a sinister mansion where Zemo discovers that her father is the Red Skull….

Arnie discovers weird footprints that mean the visitation was no dream. On a nearby rooftop, Cap is attacked by a giant black crow, which knocks him from the roof and flies off….
