Synopsis

Cosmic Powers #3 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
We begin with Jack Of Hearts kissing Ganymede. But she protests that they agreed that their relationship couldn't be physical while he was trapped in his armour (which keeps him from exploding) and she's devoted herself completely to the destruction of Tyrant. But Jack shows her that he can safely remove his armour now until he's completely naked. She joyfully strips off to join him and they start to make passionate love ...

... until Ganymede wakes him from his daydream and urges him to concentrate on co-piloting their spacecraft to a safe landing on a moon of Jupiter (Ganymede?). Thanos and Terrax are following them in a cloaked craft because Thanos wants the information that Terrax tells him Ganymede possess about Tyrant. The Titanian wants the info on which to base his strategy of attack on the powerful foe. Ganymede has come here to find out if she's really the last of the Sisterhood, ancient enemies of Tyrant, as a computer told her when it awakened her from suspended animation (Silver Surfer #80). The Sisterhood hollowed out this moon and built a city within where the Sisters received their martial training. (Apparently some of the Titanian Eternals in their similar city within Titan, moon of Saturn, knew about it - but seemingly not Thanos.)

Ganymede leads JOH into the moon where their way is blocked by a muscular Sister. Jack leaps in to take her on, ignoring his companions protest. The Sister beats him back until Ganymede switches her off by pushing a button on the back of her neck - it's only a robot. She then uses a doorcode to enter the main area ... which they find in ruins. On the surface Thanos destroys G&J's ship before he and Terrax follow them inside. The Sister fondly remembers her time here as a girl being trained, before she leads Jack to the cryonic chambers which may hold more sleeping Sisters. Meanwhile the robot Sister has rebooted to challenge Thanos and Terrax. Terrax blasts her with his axe, and when that doesn't work he chops the robot in 2. Ganymede opens 1 of the cryonic containers but the Sister within is desiccated. T&T follow a trail of open doors to where G has checked that all the Sisters here are dead.

Thanos says he's come for the woman. Jack says over-my-dead-body. Thanos tells Terrax to oblige him. Terrax blasts JOH but it is Thanos who pummels the hero while Ganymede takes on the other in foot-to-face combat. The 2 fights continue with G surviving an axe-blast and JOH blasting back at the Titan. G is doing well against her opponent, disarming him of his axe with her staff. But Thanos defeats *his* opponent and KO's the female from behind with his power-infused fists. The dastardly duo leave with Ganymede, and leave Jack to die.

Cosmic Powers #3 Review by (August 19, 2023)
This issue continues the 'featuring', this time the Jack Of Hearts and Ganymede duo.

Ganymede 1st appeared in Silver Surfer #80 where she was revived as the last of her Sisterhood to oppose the return of their enemy Tyrant. She attacked Surfer thinking him a servant of her foe because she found him where Tyrant's robots had recently captured Morg and Terrax. In #81 she told him the history of Tyrant and the Sisterhood that we learned in our #1 (but without mention of Galactus). They jointly followed the robots' energy trail to Tyrant's space Fortress where he captured them and added them to his super-powered battery with Morg and Terrax plus Beta Ray Bill and Gladiator. But Galactus wanted his current Herald Morg back. In #82 Jack Of Hearts was added to the battery but he allowed himself to explode, freeing the others. They were all defeated by Tyrant and his robots. But Galactus arrived and we learned that the Siterhood beat Tyrant the 1st time because Big G had weakened him. Now G didn't want to fight T because the battle might destroy the Galaxy. So they came to a compromise where T let the others go free but kept Morg. Ganymede took Jack away to tend to his injuries.

Since then the duo had their own backup in SS Annual #6 (also by Ron Marz). JOH recovered on a planet that the Sisterhood used a a place of rest and retreat. Now that Tyrant was gone Ganymede was prepared to give up the strict rules of the Sisterhood and enter a relationship with Jack, but of course physically limited by the fact that he couldn't remove his armour without exploding. But they were attacked by 1 of Tyrant's left-behind robots which reminded her that the battle wasn't really over, so their relationship had to remain as allies.

Jack Of Hearts 1st appeared in a series within Deadly Hands Of Kung Fu magazine. He had many other apps before Marvel Team-Up #134 revealed (to him as well as to us) that he was a human/Contraxian hybrid, which led into his own mini-series. Multi-apps in Quasar and SS followed.

Ganymede and the moon of Jupiter are both named after the mythic Greek young man who was taken by Zeus to be his immortal cup-bearer (ahem, ahem). Ganymede is the largest moon of Jupiter, and indeed the largest moon in the Solar System.
