Synopsis

Defenders, The (2001 series) #3 synopsis by Julio M2
Rating: 3 stars

Several months ago, Pluto, the Olympian Lord of the Darkness, visited the Ice Queen in Asgard, looking to revive the Valkyrie. Now, he is using the Asgardian female warrior to channel his energies to uproot the dead in his quest to conquer the Earth.

The Defenders (Hulk, Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer and Sub-Mariner) can only watch, trapped with magic in a column of a holy temple. With the aid of Papa Hagg, Hellcat, and a second Valkyrie appear to save the world, and his teammates, from Pluto.

Hellcat breaks a gem in the temple, freeing the Defenders, who fight an army of the dead. Meanwhile, the second Valkyrie turns into the Ice Queen, furious with Pluto for being used. She blasts Pluto. The original Valkyrie is in the middle of their battle.

The army of the dead seems unbeatable, so Hellcat suggests destroying the temple. That’s what Hulk, Sub-Mariner, and the Silver Surfer do. Yet the Master of the Mystic Arts tells them that could backfire. It does. The temple was locking a door to hell, so a larger army of the dead rises from the deep fires! And not even Pluto can control them!
