Synopsis

Hawkeye #5 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
This issue opens with a scene from near the end with Jessica Jones floating motionless face down in a swimming pool.

Then we flashback 9 hours. At the end of last issue New York PI Jones turned up in the office of unlicensed Los Angeles PI Kate Bishop with Brad, a guy Kate had tailed here from NY in #1. Now they grill him about a woman named Rebecca Brown whose sister told Jones is missing and the last she heard from her she was dating Brad. Brad denies everything. Along the way we learn that Kate was actually after Brad for a different reason - she's looking for her dad (as she said last issue) and Brad worked for him. Anyway they have to let him go, but Kate plants a tracker on him as he leaves.

But Jessica still thinks they should follow his car, which they do on Kate's Vespa scooter with Jessica driving. As usual Kate brings her arrows and collapsible bow in a shoulder bag. While he's in a sunglasses shop Kate rings her friend/assistant Quinn to run his vanity car plate BRADBRO. Then they have to follow the car again.

5 hours later they see that he's entered a swanky house which is hosting a party with a bouncer on the gate with a list. Jones thinks she can blag their way in. She tells him that her companion is a celebrity Hawkeye. Kate takes off her hoodie to reveal her costume underneath and pulls out her bow. He's still not impressed until Jones takes his clipboard and throws it in the air. And Hawkeye fires 3 arrows which pin the board  and loose pages to a nearby palm tree. He lets them pass.

Inside the party is in progress. They see Brad talking to recent film star Dahlia Dorian, who Kate thinks could be Rebecca after amazing plastic surgery. When Brad leaves her they approach her and Jessica addresses her as Rebecca Brown. Her crestfallen face confirms it and she takes them into a private room. Jess explains about her sister while Kate takes some surreptitious photos, but Rebecca tells them sis is only after her money and orders them to leave.

However instead they hide for 3 hours in a closet until the party sounds die away. They exit into a bedroom where all the mirrors have been smashed. Presumably they know it's Dahlia/Rebecca's bedroom because they search it for clues. But then the door opens and a 4-winged dragon bursts in. Superstrong Jones attacks it and tells Bishop to run. But Hawkeye stays to shoot arrows at it. So she pulls a 'splodey' arrow out of the bag but doesn't have a chance to use it before the dragon knocks Jones out of the room and off its balcony.

Kate races downstairs to find Jessica in the pool (where we came in). But she's OK and scrambles out. However the dragon is flying away.

Review / Commentaries

Hawkeye #5 Review by (March 2, 2024)
This is the 1st app of Kate Bishop's Vespa as well as Rebecca Brown.
It may even be the last app for the Vespa, apart from next issue's cover and an implied BTS app.

It seems it's just a coincidence that Jessica Jones is here looking for Brad in connection with her missing woman case, while Kate Bishop is looking for him because of a link to her father.
