Synopsis

Hawkeye Vs Deadpool #3 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
This issue begins with a flashback to show what really happened when Hawkeye returned to his apartment at the end of #1. He found his door forced open and went in. Now we see him get zapped and then tied to a chair, his eyes taped open and made to watch a patriotic video. Ivan and Typhoid Mary are there but this is really part of the brainwashing system carried out by Dr Lusk who laments not having enough time to fully turn him into a drone. But Clint Barton is reduced to drooling and repeating "I am a patriot".

Then last issue he participated with Deadpool and the other Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) in the operation led by SHIELD Agent Scott Adsit to retrieve the SHIELD personnel files stolen by hacker Jeremy Ellsden. The trio found the files on a USB drive attached to the collar of Ellsden's cat. But at that point Barton's brainwashing kicked in. He KOd Kate, stabbed Wade Wilson in the chest and fled with the USB.

Now Kate awakes to find DP asking her to pull the knife out of his chest, slowly because it's near his heart. Reluctantly she pulls it free and they both scream. Then Wade admits that he was kidding because his healing factor means he wasn't really in danger. So she plunges the blade back in.

Later the duo are chasing Clint-eye on foot but he steals a bicycle and speeds away. Deadpool shoots at him but Kate-eye sends an arrow into his rear tyre bringing him crashing to the ground. But then he upgrades to stealing a delivery motorbike. A pedal cabbie offers the chasers a lift but DP throws him off his bike and takes his place while Kate jumps into the trailer, and the chase is on. As Wade super-pedals Kate stands up and looses some arrows which thud harmlessly into the delivery box behind Clint. En route Wade says he hopes that the brainwashing won't let him remember that he took them both down last issue, and they agree never to mention it.

Deadpool is getting winded and Hawkeye is getting away, so he calls for an Ooper cab. It arrives as Clint reaches the Brooklyn Bridge and takes the pedestrian/cycle path down the middle. Our duo dive in and ask the driver to follow him but he refuses until DP points a gun up his nose. And Kate asks him to open the sunroof so she can stand up to use her bow and arrows. An arrow shatters the drive chain of the motorbike and Clint goes head-over-bike to the ground. But as they approach him he threatens to jump off the elevated walkway. (A similar brainwashed drone did commit suicide-by-truck in #0.) (I presume if Hawkeye jumped it wouldn't be into the river but into the traffic below.) Wade persuades Kate reluctantly that they should walk away and leave him. Clint then runs off and they follow him on foot. Wade says he has another call to make on the way.

Black Cat is angry that her minions Dr Lusk, Ivan and Typhoid Mary still haven't got hold of the stolen personnel files. But they're saved from her wrath when Clint-eye walks in with the USB stick.

Outside DP and Kate-eye are watching the building Clint went into. Wade previously called a weapons dealer named Mantle who arrives with a trunk full of personal armament. Wade persuades Kate, reluctantly again, to take a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. He want her to use it to take out an electrical substation that powers the building to prevent Black Cat uploading the data to the Internet. Meanwhile he gets Mantle to drive him somewhere else, and informs Kate he'll be returning by air.

Inside the building Felicia Hardy is indeed planning to upload the files for safety before starting to use them. But she has the usual trouble getting anything to work simply on a computer. Meanwhile we see out of the window Kate getting in position and firing a grenade which blows up the substation and plunges Cat's office into darkness. Kate is momentarily and uncharacteristically drunk with power, before coming down and feeling guilty. For some reason Clint's brainwashing is disrupted.

Meanwhile Deadpool has arrived at Avengers Mansion currently the base for the Avengers Unity Division (in Uncanny Avengers). He's here for Clint Barton's sky-cycle (which Clint told him about last issue). Kate is holding off drones with her arrows while waiting for him to arrive. Clint is pretending to still be brainwashed but Felicia is suspicious.

Hawkeye Vs Deadpool #3 Review by (July 8, 2023)
This issue Matteo Lolli and Jacopo Camagni seemingly share the pencils and inks.

Deadpool isn't yet a member of the Avengers Unity Squad (not until after Secret Wars). The current Unity Squad occupied Avengers Mansion after Luke Cage's New Avengers disbanded (NAv(2010)#34).

Hawkeye (and sometimes other Avengers) has been seen riding something like a sky-cycle since Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3. But his personal version made its appearance in his 1st mini-series.
