THIS STORY FOLLOWS FROM Avengers #88

Psyklop transfers an unconscious Hulk to an underground lab where he shrinks the Hulk to better study him. Suddenly, the Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man, Falcon, Thor, and Goliath) interrupt Psyklop.

Busy fighting the Avengers, Psyklop forgets about the Hulk, who continues shrinking until he reaches the sub-atomic plane known as the Microverse.

Hulk lands on a strange planet called K’ai. Their people are human-like but with green skin like Hulk. Hulk defeats giant pig-dogs known as Warthos, causing the approval of K’ai inhabitants.

They take Hulk to their queen Jarella, and wow, isn’t she beautiful to Ol’ Greenskin!

Jarella’s wizards, Torla, Holi and Moli, cast a spell that allows the Hulk to understand their language. As a side effect, Bruce Banner takes control over the Hulk’s form.

Hulk and Jarella fall in love immediately. She thinks she’s found her “green” prince and prepares for the wedding. But Lord Visis, her cousin, wants to marry Jarella to become king.

Lord Visis sends his men against the Hulk, but he defeats them easily and denounces Lord Visis’ treason publicly.

The multitude now acclaims the Hulk as their upcoming king.

Suddenly, Psyklop’s giant hand appears, grabbing the Hulk. Jarella cries for the departure of her beloved. Back at Psyklop’s lab, Hulk regains control, defeats the villain and departs.

Having failed his mission, the Dark Gods punish Psyklop.

Review / Commentaries

Incredible Hulk, The (1968 series) #140 Review by (May 1, 2018)

This issue is like an oasis for the Hulk who is used to being feared, misunderstood and attacked. As it should, the story takes place in an unusual location, the microverse. Hulk's might regards him as a hero. He is accepted by the locals who, having green skin, look like him. Hulk in his humbleness is welcome by the royalty, the queen, Jarella, who in favor of his heroic acts, decides to wed him. And she's kind and gorgeous!

The dream-like experience gets better when the Hulk acquires Banner's intellect. And the future king gets adored by the citizens even more after he dismantles a plan to murder the queen.

Finally, the man-monster has the perfect life, even if as an outsider. But it won't last. Sadly, everything turns upside-down, the dream shutters and the everyday nightmare reigns once again.

At the end, the brute merely remembers that exquisite experience. In such cases, being a beast is a blessing.
