Captain America’s mind drifts back to the time Sub-Mariner
discovered him frozen in ice in the Arctic…and he is interrupted by Spitfire
who also recalls the good and the bad of the World War 2 era. The other
Invaders—Human Torch, Toro, Winter Soldier—are monitoring the situation and
Machan/Roman Peterson is flooding the entire planet; Namor explains that they
are using a portal to the alternate world of Vodan and draining the water from
that submerged world—leading the surface-dweller to beg for the Genus Compound.
Cap has notified America and other heroes (we see Spider-Man and Thing) are
trying to save other so they are not available to aid the Invaders. Namor accuses
the others of driving him to formulate that plan but Torch shuts him down,
reminding that they are coming to his rescue….
Machan/Roman with the Serpent Crown has his device protected
by a force field, pumping water to flood Earth. The Invaders arrive and Machan
raises giant octopi and the vicious fishmen from the other world to battle them
in a frenzy of violence. Water-breathers like Namor can pass through the force
field and he does, hurling himself into the crowd of Atlantean troops and
shutting it off. Machan then captures Namor’s mind with the Serpent Crown and
has him first protect him (Machan) from Cap and then to fight Cap. As the two
heroes plunge into the ocean, Cap feels him fighting back and soon the memories
of being wartime comrades comes to the surface and Namor and Cap return to the
fray. Spitfire rescues Bucky and Torch goes underwater to drive off the ocean
creatures with a blast of light. Then with the cry “Namor, King of Atlantis…takes
commands from NO ONE!” he smashes Machan. Namor promises to repair the machine
to send the excess ocean back to Vodan and to take Machan back to Atlantis for
execution. Cap won’t let him: unless they take the villain back to the surface
world, everyone will still think Namor was behind it all and attack them. So
Cap tells Namor he must make the sacrifice of his need for vengeance in the
interests of his people....
Two weeks later, Steve, Jim, and Bucky talk matters over,
with Steve reporting that Namor is demanding the extradition of Machan and both
Atlantis and the USA claiming to have destroyed all the Genus Compound. Jim has
given up work on his memoirs because he is still angry with Namor. Steve
reminds him that they all went through the war together and under it all, Namor
is an Invader.
