1945: The Invaders are planning a mission but the Sub-Mariner
objects to Captain America’s plan to sneak into an enemy installation when they
can just awe them with power; Cap’s plan will minimize civilian casualties and
Bucky Barnes suggests a disguise for Namor. Through his inner voice Machan,
modern Namor ponders the necessity of the upcoming deaths….
Cap races to the military base where Winter Soldier is a
prisoner in their sick bay, having been shot in the head with a blank from his
own gun (last issue) by conspirator Anna. Bucky mentions hearing the name Roman
from Anna—and now Cap knows that Roman Peterson is the traitor who gave the
weapons components to Atlantis….
Cap calls Human Torch in Maine, telling him to warn the Navy
and find Roman, while Cap will assemble the Avengers. Torch takes off but is
intercepted by Namor and his men and there is a spectacular fight wherein Subby
knocks the head off his android ex-partner.
Meanwhile, the Avengers (Iron Man, Captain Marvel,
Black Panther, She-Hulk) have found Atlantis on lockdown via a powerful force field.
Iron Man is mad at Cap for having tried and failed at a peaceful solution with
Namor. Cap calls Admiral October at the base and warns her that Roman Peterson
is a double agent for Atlantis, to prevent the US from retaliating after an
Atlantean attack. When the Admiral confronts Roman, he and his men kill the
Admiral and the staff of the control room….
Cap arrives in town to see the US missiles streaking toward
Atlantis. He is met by Namor, bearing the severed head of the Human Torch. As
they battle, Cap realizes that, with the Avengers in place to stop the missiles
from hitting Atlantis, Atlantis could retaliate against the “unprovoked attack,”
justifying what happens next. But the Avengers will stop Atlantis’ missiles too,
right? No, Namor’s weapons weren’t in his city. They are launched and they strike
their targets….
