Story Name:

The Deep End [Part Four]: Force Projection

Synopsis

Invincible Iron Man #82 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
Tony Stark has a vision of Baghdad being destroyed by Ishtar’s bioweapon leading to a nuclear holocaust then he recovers his senses, having just been punched in the face by Force. Force accuses Tony Stark of having betrayed him: Sunny Burch used the knowledge that he had once been a mercenary under another name to blackmail him into recreating the Iron Man armors for him (issues #73-78) and Burch claimed Stark had revealed this info to Burch out of jealousy over Walker’s mechanical talent. A soldier helps Tony escape into the ruins and they set a trap, blinding Force with a bag over his head; in anger the armored hero blows up the temple and is buried in the rubble. Immobilized for the moment, Tony explains that a basic security check would have uncovered his previous identity, since they couldn’t have altered his fingerprints. Force realizes the truth of this and apologizes to Tony. The freed soldiers hurry to their vehicles to chase down the fleet of tanker trucks carrying the deadly bioweapon toward the river. There is a rolling battle, with Force taking out the trucks one by one until the last one, with Ishtar aboard, remains. She knocks Force out of the sky with a blast; Tony pleads with her to turn back but she refuses, riding the tanker truck into the river where it will float downstream to infect Baghdad. Tony calls in a bomber—to drop milk of magnesia, which neutralizes acid, onto the truck and Ishtar….

At the airport, Tony prepares to meet with the local officials and businessmen about repairing the country—but he gets a phone call from the States, which shocks him and he hurries to the plane to head home….

Review / Commentaries

Invincible Iron Man #82 Review by (May 8, 2021)
Comments: Tony Stark doesn’t don the Iron Man armor in this issue. Final appearance of Ishtar/Vitriol as of 2021. Force returns in issue #84 and after that his only later appearances are in DARK REIGN: THE HOOD #3-5.

Review: And that’s a nice wrap up, with a goofy ending (milk of magnesia? Really? Well, who needs armor when you’ve got chemistry on your side?). And Force turns out to be reasonable when his mistake is pointed out to him. That’s unusual for a comic book bad guy, even though he’s not really a bad guy, just a dupe. He could have been further developed into a really cool supporting character but he wasn’t. Too bad. And so the issue ends with an emergency call that tells us nothing, even though it’s the same writer and he should know. See you in thirty (as Stan Lee used to say).
