Synopsis

Invincible Iron Man #9 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

As the tale opens, Tony Stark is brooding about the fact that he arrived 22 minutes late in response to an Avengers distress call (last issue); the emergency response system is working perfectly, so that would indicate a glitch in the internal clock of the Iron Man armor—but then why doesn’t Tony remember that gap? His mind drifts back to the murder of his mentor Professor Ho Yinsen. And now two of the men responsible for Yinsen’s death have been murdered and Tony Stark is the chief suspect….

At CIA headquarters, Nick Fury addresses an assembly including the Secretary of Defense. He outlines the case against Tony Stark by showing film of Iron Man’s appearance at the scenes of the crimes and that the violence done was consonant with the weaponry known to be used by Iron Man. And since Tony was enhanced by the Extremis Virus, no one else is able to use the armor. Plus the Extremis Virus has been known to cause paranoia and hostility in its host…. Tony comes onto the screen, revealing he has been monitoring the proceedings and, while proclaiming his innocence, surrenders himself into custody until the peace summit is over….

Tony is locked up in Leavenworth Prison, the last maximum security penitentiary which is not operated digitally and therefore proof against Tony’s Extremis abilities, while the Iron Man armor is stored at Fort Knox. In London, the hooded killer selects the next two names on his list of targets and presses "execute." The Iron Man armor in Fort Knox assembles itself and flies through the roof…

…soon Iron Man is spotted over the Iraqi desert, heading toward the base of the next two targets, Zakim Karzai and Aftaab Lemar. The Armored Avenger single-handedly takes on the Iraqi military and wins. He seizes the two terrorists and flies as high as the unprotected human body can stand…and drops them. Iron Man lands and unmasks…revealing a shocked and confused Tony Stark.

Nick Fury reports Tony’s escape to the authorities, then gives the authorization to send the Sentry to stop him….

Invincible Iron Man #9 Review by (February 29, 2012)
Comments: The graffiti on the walls of Tony Stark’s prison cell include the lyrics to “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash, “Gin Soaked Boy” by Tom Waits, “Four Walls” by Jim Reeves, “The Wall” by Pink Floyd, and “Lost Cause” by Beck. And it all appears to be in the same handwriting.

Invincible Iron Man #9 Review by (June 18, 2014)
To better keep the rationale of the current story arc I would have explained things differently. I would have tampered with the flashbacks in IM(1998)#31-32 and the 2000 Annual. There are 2 major events:- The shot Yinsen gives his journal to Sun-Tao, leading to formation of the Sons of Yinsen, and Dr Midas spirits Yinsen away, later reducing him to a living brain. I would separate these 2 and put a real execution video in between. I would also make the execution a beheading, as the flashback here hints at, which would help explain why Dr Midas only preserved the brain. For completeness I'll mention that IM#267-268 revealed that Wong-Chu was working for Mandarin, and Yinsen had been kidnapped to investigate the properties of Mandarin's alien rings. When Stark fell into their hands, Mandarin wanted Yinsen to save him so they could *both* work on the rings.

Henry (Beast) McCoy and Leonard (Doc) Samson wrote the report on the psychological effects of Extremis. The Fury LMD is here allowed to fool a roomful of high-ranking government officials. Tony Stark remembers here that Ho Yinsen didn't die during Iron Man's escape in the Afghanistan version of his origin in #5, but was later seen to be executed in a video by the 5 guys mentioned here. This appears to contradict something appended to the original Vietnam origin, where Yinsen did 'die' helping Iron Man escape, but his brain was preserved. This led to a couple of story arcs involving a cult called the Sons of Yinsen. The Official Index merges the 2 stories together, but it has to subvert this story to do it. Nick Fury says that the assassinated individuals were responsible for the execution of Yinsen, and Tony's flashback is obviously meant to show this event. But the 2008 Iron Manual says that Yinsen's execution was faked, allowing the Sons of Yinsen stories to still work. The video was actually footage from Yinsen being tortured to make him obey Wong-Chu.
