Iron Man: Hypervelocity #1 Review by (June 17, 2022)
Comments: First appearance of Tony Stark 2.0, Major Tom Aramaki, and Absynthe. The new Iron Man armor is called Model 28.

Review: Cyberpunk Iron Man? Lead me to it. I was around when the science fiction sub-genre was introduced in 1984 with Neuromancer by William Gibson. And I ate it up. And now, er, a quarter century or so later, Marvel hires a writer to bring the same sensibility to the techiest of their properties, Iron Man. Now I know a lot of people don’t like this miniseries, calling it a confusing bunch of scientific jargon and profiles of high tech toys. And on a superficial reading, I may have agreed as I’m not the most technologically literate of readers. But having to read it multiple times to write these synopses, I’ve come to see the complexity of the story underlying all the high-tech mayhem and I’ve become all the more impressed. And so the epic gets off to a quick start with SHIELD chasing Iron Man and it’s not until the final pages that we learn this is a different sort of Iron Man in a different sort of Iron Man story. Rogue armor is a familiar trope as is SHIELD pursuing Shellhead for some reason or another. But this is not that story. Didn’t the hero being decapitated give it away? This issue in retrospect just lays the groundwork for a creative new take on the hero.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Iron Man: Hypervelocity #1 Synopsis by T Vernon
Iron Man in a new armor flies through the air pursued by jets firing missiles at him and he dodges easily. He is being monitored by SHIELD Special Response Team Alpha, informally known as the Capekillers, led by Major Tom Aramaki who orders a launch of a Godhammer ballistic missile, telling his pilots to contain Iron Man within the range of its blast. Tony’s mind goes back to his teen years, riding a superfast motorcycle with his hot girlfriend Naomi Clarke, drunk on wine coolers. Suddenly Naomi’s image is replaced by that of a green-tinted goth girl who is speaking Chinese for a second, confusing Tony who has never seen that woman before. SHIELD jets try to contain him but he breaks into a cockpit to find the pilot is an LMD controlled from the ground by virtual reality. The LMD pilot detonates….

Tony’s mind goes to a late night at his office when he discovers one of the armors is missing. It snakes up behind him and draws him inside to find the interior lined with razor blades, slicing him up as the goth girl reappears, speaking French this time. He wakes up: it was a dream. The Godhammer payload detonates, tearing Iron Man’s head off.  Aramaki rejoices though he knows the suit is empty. And the person in the suit reveals he is not really Tony Stark….
