Synopsis

Marvel Team-Up #35 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Spider-Man and Valkyrie have vanished after defeating the Meteor Man; Doctor Strange wants to rescue them but he debates recruiting the Human Torch, Spidey’s only true friend, to help because of his frequent bursts of immaturity.  Clea asks Strange if she can help and he appreciates her being there for him. He then flies out to meet Torch in the air to outline the situation and Johnny agrees to join in the search. Strange suggests Johnny check out Meteor Man’s old lab in Harlem while he contacts the police….

Torch enters Norton (Meteor Man) Fester’s old lab on an upper floor where he is met by a little boy put there by Jeremiah to wait for someone who came looking for the lady with the sword. Jeremiah then appears and knocks Johnny out with a blast from his eyes….

Johnny awakens tied to a pillar as an unconscious Valkyrie is bound to an altar with Jeremiah performing some rite over her. He flames on but the Prophet again subdues him, with a blast from his hand this time. He orders Torch doused in holy water and tied up again….

Dr. Strange is at the prison asking about Norton Fester when he senses danger. He releases his astral form to search for the danger and he sees a specter of evil over the city. Entering the specter’s astral plane, he sees Valkyrie threatened by monsters, minions of Oruthu, and calling to him for help. He fights them but finds it is much easier to destroy them with a simple spell. Val’s body dissolves into mist and returns to Earth. Strange follows….

Johnny again bursts into flame to battle Jeremiah who is surprised that Val’s body has returned from where he sent it. Torch and the Prophet engage in a battle of blasts but the Innocents of God start awakening as if from a trance. Johnny realizes they are under Jeremiah’s control and he separates them from the Prophet with a wall of flame. Jeremiah says he can command them to die for him But Jermiah gets in a lucky blast, subduing Torch but by now Dr, Strange has arrived, accusing the prophet of being a charlatan, a mutant with the ability to use the mental energies of others for his own ends. Jeremiah rushes at Strange who waves his hand and banishes Jeremiah to the realm he tried to send Val to. The Innocents, out of the Prophet’s power wander off and Strange assures Johnny that Jeremiah won’t be back, trapped in his own private hell….

Marvel Team-Up #35 Review by (March 18, 2025)

Review: A very strange third part of a trilogy: Valkyrie is a helpless prisoner and Spider-Man has vanished completely. Our two new heroes, not seen previously, are Human Torch, the occasional fill-in for Spidey, and Dr. Strange. And the plot, previously about a villain with superpowers escaping from prison and stealing meteors, is now full of magic and mysticism. Kudos to Gerry Conway for coming up with such an original direction to take it as the plot with the Meteor Man was getting a bit thin for two issues, much less three. A shame Spidey isn’t mentioned after the first few pages. Or that Strange’s concern about Johnny’s immaturity isn’t borne out after a single joke when they meet. But then characterization isn’t the big selling point of the issue when you have a guy on fire and another guy who can work magic. Some hints of religious matters pop up but nothing serious comes of them. And next issue, it’s Spider-Man Meets Frankenstein, a real pop culture crossover.

Comments: Part three of three parts. Human Torch’s final appearance as the dominant half of the team-up; subsequent appearances all have his supporting Spider-Man. Human Torch wears the red and yellow costume he wore in FANTASTIC FOUR #132-139. Final appearance of Jeremiah and the Innocents of God, introduced in issue #33. There is no explanation as to how Torch discovered Meteor Man’s address. Letters page includes one by future rock ‘n’ roll historian Mark Barsotti.
