Synopsis

Secret Empire #6 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The other Steve Rogers is the prisoner of the mysterious Red Skull. When Steve is the only one left, the Skull tells him he is in hell and the only escape is death....

In New York, trapped by the Darkforce Dome, Claire Temple must tend to Dagger, who is dying from having to supply light to the benighted city while Doctor Strange seeks a permanent solution. Elsewhere, Daredevil stops what he thinks is a robbery by the Kingpin's men but it turns out to be a food delivery to the hungry, part of Kingpin's campaign to become the trusted leader when the crisis is lifted....

In Maryland, the youthful heroes are tired of Black Widow, her use of torture and murder and now her alliance with Viper. Spider-Man (M. Morales) goes to talk to Natasha , telling her of the dissension in the ranks. Nat insists she is teaching them to survive when things get worse; Miles suggests that maybe the Underground will find the Cosmic Cube and set everything right....

In Nevada, the Mount (HQ of the Underground) is under siege by Hydra forces, including their tentacled helicarriers. The defenses are good enough to stop Thor Odinson, the Vision, and the Scarlet Witch so the Tony Stark AI reveals that one of those present is a traitor. Suspicion bounces back and forth until someone notices Mockingbird is conveniently absent; Bobbi, caught, reveals she has been in touch with Maria Hill. Giant-Man reveals that Tony's Cosmic Cube detector was a total hoax. As they fight, suddenly Ant-Man confesses that he is the traitor because Hydra has his daughter Cassie hostage.

Captain America talks to Bruce Banner (temporarily resurrected) reminding him how badly he has been used by the Avengers, especially during the two Civil Wars (sent to another planet/killed), how they are totally corrupt, hating whatever doesn't bend to their authority; Bruce refuses to cooperate, knowing that Hydra is even worse. Cap responds “I wasn't talking to you, Bruce.”

Then the Hulk crashes through the Mount's defenses and chaos breaks out. Pausing briefly to realize that in a way they deserve what is about to happen, Hawkeye then leads an evacuation while the new Giant-Man activates a team of androids Avengers to fight the Hulk, while Thor allows Hawkeye and the refugees to go free....

Finally, Captain America confronts Tony Stark AI and they fight, Cap ensuring that the AI is Tony's actual consciousness and Tony regretting he is not able to save Cap.... Madame Hydra, detecting an unusual energy signature, races to the scene and casts a spell sending Cap elsewhere just as the nuclear weapon explodes....

Black Widow hears the news that the Underground has been defeated. She has a drink, sheds a tear, and tell the young heroes “Tomorrow we kill Captain America.”

Review / Commentaries

Secret Empire #6 Review by (July 23, 2017)
Comments: Additional art by Rod Reis, Joshua Cassara, Rachelle Rosenberg for the “other Steve Rogers” segment. Leinil Francis Yu also contributed to the inking and Java Tartaglia assisted with the colors. Last issue's cover would have been more appropriate here but the present cover is good enough. Daimon Hellstrom (i.e. Son of Satan) is mentioned as having created mystical defenses for the Mount.

Review: Well, things get darker. Bruce Banner is back and Cap makes a very detailed and very damning case against the Avengers, a very remarkable thing to put in a comic book starring these guys. And you know what? Hawkeye agrees with them—that's the gist of what is running through his mind as the Hulk breaks into the Mount. But it takes a few reminders to get him to act the hero, which he does. Nice issue shows us the despair of the good guys as they are once more overwhelmed by Hydra and Bad Cap. Best fake out: It really looked like Mockingbird was the traitor last issue.
