Story Name:

The God Butcher, Part Four of Five: The Last God in Asgard

Synopsis

Thor: God of Thunder #4 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

In the far future, the aged Thor has been overwhelmed and captured by the Black Berserkers of Gorr the God Butcher. As they carry him off he broods over being the last surviving god of the ruined Asgard, having lived long enough to see everyone he knows die. The Berserkers place him on his throne and…leave. Demanding an end to his life, Thor calls on them to return and kill him….

In the present, Thor speaks with Shadrak, the refugee god he found in Gorr’s cave. The alien god relates how Gorr made him watch as he butchered all of Shadrak’s family and friends. Escaping, he came to this cave, knowing Gorr would never come there, the site of his defeat by Thor, which is why he’s saving the Thunder God for last. Thor demands all the information his host can supply but Shadrak refuses, letting slip only the word "Chronux." Thor guarantees his protection and carries the unwilling god off to Omnipotence City, the nexus of all the gods. There they find the Black Berserkers on a rampage, torching the library….

493 A.D.: Gorr the God Butcher has Thor chained in his cave, torturing him for information on all of his pantheon, relishing the entertainment the Thunder God will give him….

Thor battles the Berserkers in the burning Hall while seeking information about Chronux from the Librarian, who tells him Chronux is a hidden world—and the location is found in a scroll that is in flames. The hero snatches the book from the fire and manages to find the planet’s location before it crumbles in his hands. Leaving Shadrak to help put out the fire, Thor heads for Chronux, Palace of Infinity. Meanwhile on that world, Gorr and his Berserkers have already slain all but one of the Time Gods and have poured their blood into the Pool of Forevers, as the God Butcher intends to travel to the distant past….

In the future, elderly Thor drags himself out of the palace to confront his enemies, summoning Mjolnir to him and striking out. He is stabbed in the back by one of the Berserkers. As he lies helpless, calling on Gorr to finish him already, there is a blinding flash—and a younger Thor stands among them….

Review / Commentaries

Thor: God of Thunder #4 Review by (January 12, 2013)
Review: Another grim and melancholy issue serves to carry the story forward but not very far, as we seem to be merely preparing for the big finale next issue. Gorr tortures Thor/Thor makes his way to Chronux seem to be the talking points, leaving the heavy characterization to the relatively unimportant Shadrak. Good issue—and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Comments: Issue includes a two-page letters column, “Hammer Grams.”
