God And Man

Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Hannah Fairmont has encountered her fiancé Jake Olson in his apartment, shocked because she was told he was dead. And he is: this Jake is Thor inhabiting his body and he does not have Jake’s knowledge or memories. Thor is confused by his new condition and tries to deduce her name and their relationship through clues in her speech. He assures her that he was only slightly injured by the Destroyer (issue #1). She reminds him that it is his turn to pick up her daughter Amanda from school and she helpfully includes the address. He sees her out, unwittingly falling into Thor’s speech patterns and passing it off as a joke. He gazes into a mirror and discovers his new appearance, despairing over having to impersonate a man he knows nothing about….

A small submarine on an exploratory mission discovers the hulk of a Viking ship intact on the ocean bottom. They are thrilled until a giant monster seizes the sub and crushes it. The monster is the servant of Sedna, the Sea Spirit, who discovers the jeweled eyes of the ship and takes them, hoping to learn about their masters….

Hannah Fairmont visits Demitrius Collins, bringing the good news that Jake is alive after all. Demitrius is overjoyed…until Hannah is out of sight, then he grumbles that the dead Jake was “the perfect patsy to pin this evil business on….”

Jake/Thor is leaving his building when he is confronted by Marnot, invisible to all but Jake, who comes across as a lunatic to passers-by, seemingly arguing with no one. Jake is angry, demanding to know what is going on, how he would change to Thor when needed, and where the hammer is. Marnot declines to answer anything while threatening to give him back to Hela if he demands anything of him again. Marnot vanishes and suddenly Sedna is swimming through the air on a moving waterspout, searching for the god who made the jewels. To prompt an answer from the mortals, she sends waves crashing over buildings and people, including Jake who is washed away. He recognizes the jeweled eyes from the ship and wonders if Sedna knows what happened to the lost gods but try as he might, he cannot will himself into becoming Thor. Angry at Marnot, he curses him and slams his fist to the ground (as though he had Don Blake’s cane) which triggers his transformation into the God of Thunder, complete with Mjolnir. He flies to challenge Sedna who finds him handsome; she sends a wave of water crashing over him and he repels it, creating rain for the bystanders below….

Meanwhile, Amanda Fairmont is at school, waiting for Jake to come pick her up, thinking he’s a jerk who doesn’t really care about her or her mother. Then she is approached by a trio of gangsta dudes….

Thor pursues Sedna over land toward the river; he hurls Mjolnir and destroys the waterspout she travels by. Sedna summons a giant sea monster so Thor seizes her and throws Mjolnir into the monster’s mouth…and he is stunned to see the beast swallow it. Sedna wraps Thor in her coils, intending to make him her mate; she drags him under the sea and waits for her powers to transform him into a water-breather. But Thor wonders why Mjolnir has not returned to him….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #3 Review by (March 12, 2025)

Review: So…Jake’s not dead and Thor must navigate a new identity without an instruction book. This is the part I mentioned last time that “kind of straddles the line of suspense and cringe,” which proves Dan Jurgens was successful in portraying the reality of the situation. Meanwhile, Thor battles an amorous sea witch with a couple of monsters at her beck and call, one of which eats Mjolnir. It’s quite amusing and you can guess who will show up next issue to rescue the soggy God of Thunder. And we have a couple of hints of things to come: Demitrius’ odd reaction to learning that Jake is alive (who’s the bad guy here?) and Amanda being approached by a trio of, well, Black men, designed to trigger a certain response in white readers. That is the most daring of all the developments in the issue. So let’s move on to part two, shall we and see what happens to Amanda. Oh and Thor too….

Comments: Part one of two parts. First appearance of Sedna, the Sea Spirit; next issue is her final bow. One of the ocean explorers is apparently named Bullwinkle after the cartoon character; his buddy exclaims, “Hokey smoke!” after Bullwinkle’s pal Rocky the Flying Squirrel. And their call signals to the ship are Gilligan and Skipper after the characters in the sitcom GILLIGAN’S ISLAND (1964-1967). The jeweled eyes are from a ship commanded by Thor way back in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #120 through THOR #126. Lettering credited to Richard Starkings, Comicraft, Dave Lanphear.
