Thor #33 Review by (April 26, 2023)

Review: Finally, Thor meets Doom—for five seconds. Old timey Marvel comics has spoiled us, training us to expect violence as drama to please our inner eight-year-old. So anyway, stuff is happening and, as usual, I’m not certain I’m understanding all the nuances. Or even some of the big points.

Comments:  As is common in this series, the event depicted on the cover, Laussa defeating Thor and gaining Mjolnir, does not take place in the issue, with Laussa not even appearing.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #33 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Thanos is in prehistoric Vanaheim, trapped there for years and knowing that his goal has arrived: that night Bor will create the Black Stone….

Now: Valkyrie (Jane Foster) sees the souls of the dead being burned to provide fuel for Doctor Doom’s mad scheme. She summons Mister Horse, asking him to bring Runa. As Doom studies his spell, Hela rebukes him for his crimes….

Thor is facing a band of ordinary Latverians, armed with guns to stop Thor and directed by a Doombot. The Thunder God spins Mjolnir, deflecting the bullets to shoot down the Doombot as another takes its place. This Doombot commands the Latverians to jump off the cliff, challenging Thor to save them….

Ancient past: Thanos fights Bor’s army while Bor commands the souls to be burnt to fuel his plans….

Thor heads into the castle and attacks Doom who dashes through a portal and Hela tells Thor to let him go and end the spell. Thor takes up the magic book where Doom left it, reenacting the ritual he saw on the cave wall. Thor feels their devotion and obedience and is tempted to keep them under control as his worshippers but he fights off that urge and sets them free. Hela goes to tend to the dead, warning him that some things are inevitable….

Ancient past: The ritual is completed and the furnace of the dead is ignited. The mountain explodes and Thanos enters the furnace room, seeing, in place of the Black Stone, a child being formed….
