Synopsis

Tigra #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

On his birthday, Greer Grant Nelson visits the grave of her policeman husband Bill, killed in the line of duty. As she ponders her life with him, she is interrupted by Police Captain Morrison. She berates him for never having solved Bill’s murder; he hands her a paper about the Brethren of the Blue Fist. She accuses him of being dirty; Morrison suggests Bill may have been dirty, too. She restrains herself with difficulty….

The following night she is out on a date with a cop named Liam, who is enchanted with her. Later, they are in bed but she can’t go through with sex because she can’t stop thinking about Bill….

Across town, an officer breaks up a prostitute meeting a John, telling the guy to leave. A block later he is grabbed by two masked cops with blue gloves who execute hm. They walk past the first officer…who raises his fist in solidarity….

As Tigra, Greer goes out at night and silently observes a rooftop meeting of the Brethren of the Blue Fist; they are disciplining a new member who spoke about them to outsiders. The cop is beaten and left lying on the roof; Tigra swipes his ID but is spotted and she gives a beating to several Blue Fist cops before taking off while the cops shoot at her. Reaching safety, shoe looks at the guy’s ID and sees it is a detective’s gold badge….

At Avengers Mansion, Tigra has a talk with Captain America and Wasp about the Brethren of the Blue Fist. She wants to trace this group to their source and asks if Cap can help her; he offers her any kind of support she needs. He watches as she works out, viciously tearing at practice cushions and asks what her goals are. She doesn’t know….

At night, Tigra spies on Captain Morrison’s home in Brooklyn and sees him get into a car with some Blue Fist guys. She follows atop a truck but must duck to avoid a tunnel. Emerging from the other side she sees two identical cars and forces her way into the wrong one. With a hasty apology, she pursues the other and ends up confronting Morrison in an alley, demanding to know how Bill was connected to the Blue Fist. Morrison just bleeds and drops dead at her feet….

Tigra #1 Review by (January 14, 2025)

Review: From the creator of WITCHBLADE comes this revisiting of the career of Tigra the Were-Woman, casting her as a disappointing Avenger but searching for something more. Christina Z also manages to solve her husband’s murder which was weighing on her heavily so now she can move on. But it doesn’t stick, like most popular characters, she goes through a lot more changes including joining Tony Stark’s side in Civil War, getting knocked up by a Skrull, teaching at the Avengers Academy, joining the Defenders, fighting the Punisher, becoming a giant, rejoining the West Coast Avengers, joining the Defenders again, fighting the Phoenix, teaming up with Moon Knight, and a lot of crazy stuff. Some people just can’t sit still.

So, back to this miniseries. As noted, it’s about Greer Nelson finding herself by solving her husband’s murder and joining the NYPD, with blessing of Captain America. She is portrayed as a woman on a mission, her animal side restrained while much of her heroic effort is done in her human guise, a sign of a woman who has more under control than she is aware of. Mike Deodato’s art contributes to this adult version of Tigra and not just the sex scene in issue #1; there’s a solid realism to it all. And the ship explosion in issue #3 is truly epic.

Issue #4 hits a few snags: how did Greer know that Weising was the murder suspect when Keenan explicitly did not tell her? Deodato’s artwork is at its most intense here, making Tigra scary but some of the action scenes are hard to follow.

Overall, a fine capstone to her career as this is her last solo book to date (2024); seems that, despite her self-consciousness, Marvel has decided she works better in a team.

Comments: In Marvel’s Icons imprint.
