Synopsis

Uncanny X-Men (2012 series) #11 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

On Utopia Island off San Francisco Dr Nemesis, 1 of the X-Club scientists, reports to Cyclops and Emma Frost about Hope Summers' latest Phoenix-shaped energy burst (in Avengers Vs X-Men #1). This 1 was bigger and directed as a signal out into space. Scott Summers knows that someone will come for Hope now and they'll have to fight to keep her safe.

The teenager in question is in the X-Brig consulting robot inmate Unit, the only survivor of a millennia-dead alien empire. The Brig's warden Danger, the robot avatar of the Danger Room, comes to tell Hope that Scott wants to see her. Unit advises Hope to ignore what others say is her destiny and forge her own. After Hope's gone Unit, who has taken over Danger, tells her to keep recording what the girl does - it will be useful for his coming Universal Utopia.

Later Cyclops meets Captain America on the beach with Emma Frost, Colossus, Magneto and Namor the Sub-Mariner to back him up. Cap and the Avengers have come in a SHIELD Helicarrier to take Hope into protective custody. She is also there, changed out of her Phoenix-y costume. Namor gives us a voiceover on the meeting explaining why he's an ally of the X-Men. He *is* a mutant but humans don't think of him as 1 so he needn't be here. But he admires Cyclops' stand for his people against the USA. He's declaring war on them, as Subby often has. Also Namor fancies Scott's woman (Emma). But really he claims he'll always support the few against the many. While we're listening to Namor we don't hear what Steve Rogers and Scott are saying. But Cyclops fires an optic blast which Cap takes on his shield. And then Colossus flies (AvX#2 tells us it's Magneto doing a magnetic fastball special) up to the Helicarrier, and either he or a Cyke optic blast smashes into it. Namor enters the water of San Francisco Bay.

Colossus provides a voiceover for the next part. Piotr Rasputin became the new Juggernaut (in #542 of the previous series) and since then he's remained in his steel form. He tells us that in steel he can usually keep control of his Juggernaut-ness but he fears that in human form he'd lose that control. We see him fighting Red Hulk underwater (with Luke Cage, Spider-Woman and Thing floating/drowning in the background). But Rulk tries to gouge his eyes out which makes him angry and he goes full-Juggy, bulking up and gaining an armoured crab-like carapace. And the voiceover says Piotr is lost in the rage.

Emma Frost took Hope inside Utopia and left her with her students telling them to keep her there. But now *her* voiceover tells us that she's defeated them all with her Phoenix power. Now Spider-Man and Wolverine (on the Avengers' side) find her. She'd agreed with Logan that if she went bad he should kill her. But she tells us she *hasn't* gone bad so uses her power to repel both heroes and runs out into the air.

We're back to Colossus' voiceover and his fight with Red Hulk. Piotr's back but relishing it. They're trading mighty blows that kill fish with their shockwaves and Colossus/Juggernaut keeps piling it on until Rulk points out with a grin that they are damaging a pillar that supports Utopia. To stop himself from breaking it Colossus rips off his crab armour and allows Rulk to beat him senseless.

Piotr's sister Magik telepathically informs Cyclops of his fall. But he's more worried that Hope has left the island and Danger can't locate her. He uses his mobile phone to activate something called the Avengers Protocol ...

... and in her Los Angeles office Kate Kildare, the X-Men's PR person, sends out a pre-prepared press release from Cyclops. It says that the US Government came to the sovereign mutant nation Utopia to arrest a teenage girl just because she's a mutant. He previously threatened dire repercussions if something like this happened. Be grateful that he was bluffing.

Uncanny X-Men (2012 series) #11 Review by (October 19, 2025)
This issue spans Avengers Vs X-Men #1 and #2.

The meeting between Captain America and Cyclops was shown, with speech bubbles, in #1.

The battle and Hope leaving is in #2. In particular this issue greatly expands the Colossus/Red Hulk fight.
