Last issue the Phoenix 5 (Colossus, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik and Sub-Mariner) invaded Mr Sinister's version of Victorian London beneath Anchorage, Alaska and they got beaten. Now the non-Phoenix members of the Utopia Council (Danger, Magneto, Psylocke and Storm) have come to see what's happening.

They're attacked by Marauder clones of Sabretooth. But their victims are only a mental creation of Psylocke ...

... but it also fools Sinister who reports their demise to the 5, held in force bubbles generated by 3 Madelyne Pryor clones. It turns out that the MP clones have absorbed their Phoenix power. It also turns out that Sinister wasn't fooled at all. He knows the 4 survived and he was just toying with his captives.

The 3 humans outside decide not to call in reinforcements until they've scouted the opposition. The robot Danger is mentally contacted by her 'boss' Unit, the alien robot imprisoned in the X-Brig in Utopia. He wants her to find out how Sinister creates his clone army, and particularly how they were able to access the Phoenix power. She proposes to her companions to infiltrate Sinister's castle to find out about the clones. She can protect herself from mental detection but she needs Psylocke's Ninja stealth. She can turn herself into a suit that Betsy Braddock can wear.

Magneto and Storm distract the defensive forces. But Sinister sends a 4th Madelyne against them. A mid-air battle between the Phoenix and Storm's lightning ensues which the Windrider loses. But Magneto blocks Pryor's attack with a load of metal and then infects her with Phalanx material. She's not happy about being invaded by the Techno-Organic Virus but she burns it off and then smashes Erik's psychic-defensive helmet and takes over his mind.

Inside that mind she learns where Psylocke/Danger has gone. She and Magneto go there and she mentally peels off the Danger-armour so that Erik can hurl metal shards at Betsy. But the Ninja leaps from shard to shard in flight until she reaches Magneto and injects him with a powerful sedative. Then she runs away carrying Magneto until she finds where Danger has rebuilt herself and has found the P5 with Sinister and 3 Madelyne's. Unit realises that Sinister's forces are too strong and makes Danger run away. But she manages to take Magneto and Psylocke with her.

Emma Frost takes advantage of the distraction to contact the Phoenix Force within the Madelyne clones. She persuades it that Sinister will keep it prisoner and it's in its best interests to escape. So it does so and consumes Madelyne 4 who is chasing Danger. Danger picks up Storm and completes their escape.

In his control room Sinister has detected M4's problem. But the other 3 Madelyne's start to melt down and then they explode. MrS desperately gives a general evacuation order. If at least 1 of *his* many clones escapes then he can transfer his consciousness into it. But then the free and re-Phoenixed 5 release enough energy to burn him and his city to cinders.

When Cyclops joins the non-Phoenix 4 he says that they have destroyed all traces of Sinister and his clones, so his 'species' has been wiped out.

Uncanny X-Men (2012 series) #17 Review by (March 7, 2026)
This issue is the end of a sequence taking place early within Avengers Vs X-Men #7.

Michael Del Mundo did some of the internal art, and Diego Olmos did a bit too.

Mr Sinister will escape destruction by taking over the X-Men's PR person Kate Kildare.
