Uncanny X-Men (2012 series) #13

The Phoenix Force is heading for Earth and everyone thinks it's coming to make teen mutant Hope Summers the next Phoenix. The Avengers wanted to stop it from getting to her but Cyclops' X-Men (the Extinction Team) believed she would usher in a new era for mutants. Wolverine took a middle path and took Hope to the Blue Area of the Moon (where there's a breathable atmosphere) to keep Earth safe while she met her fate, but promised to kill her if she turned into Dark Phoenix. However he told Captain America where they're going, and Emma Frost telepathically overheard. So now 5 mutants (Cyclops, Colossus/Juggernaut, Emma Frost, Magik and Sub-Mariner) and 5 Avengers (Black Widow, Captain America, Hawkeye, Red Hulk and Thing) have come to the Blue Area too (at the end of Avengers Vs X-Men #4).

And of course they start fighting (here and at the start of AvX#5).

But we look in on other X-Men regrouping in 1 of the X-Diaspora hideouts set up by the Extinction Team, licking their wounds after fighting Avengers while searching for Hope (in AvX#4). Magneto leads Psylocke in with her arm in a splint. They find Storm with Dr Nemesis. He's delirious from a neurotoxin dart Black Widow shot him with while they fought in Wakanda. Ororo tells them that the 5 have been teleported by Magik to the Moon. Magneto wants to follow them but the only other teleporter thay have on their side is Pixie. Psylocke reminds them that she with other X-teens on Utopia Island were taken to the Avengers Academy. Storm says they escaped (actually they were allowed to go free in AvAc#31) and no-one knows where she is now.

We see Pixie teleporting to Utopia with Primal, Transonic and Velocidad. They somehow have a note from Hope saying "Sorry. Ask Unit." So they teleport into the Utopia brig where the robot is imprisoned. It knows that Hope contacted them and prepares to tell them what it knows about the Phoenix.

Back in the safehouse Storm recalls fighting with her husband Black Panther, who was of course on the Avengers team in Wakanda. T'Challa KO'd her (that's not how AVX:Vs#5 showed it, but both depictions agree that the marriage is over) and when she woke up Danger had brought her and Nemesis here. Magneto reports that his son Pietro/Quicksilver is on the other side too. Psylocke mentions that she was so busy fighting *him* in Wundagore that she let Red Hulk sneak up and break her arm. Erik/Max says that his other child Wanda/Scarlet Witch hasn't turned against them. But on the other hand she *did* almost exterminate mutants (at the end of the House Of M event). Psylocke and Storm comment that at least Angel and Iceman in Wundagore and Rachel Grey in Wakanda left Wolverine's unaligned Jean Grey School to join the fight. And Magneto says only Wolvie, Quicksilver and Beast joined the Avengers side (well they have all been Avengers at various times). They toast the 5 on the Moon.

Back in Utopia Unit describes the Phoenix as a cosmic force of destruction and rebirth. It believes that it was 'offended' when Scarlet Witch said "No more mutants." and is here to redress the balance. It tells them of a time when it saw the Phoenix in action. There was a world ruled by demon princes who magically stalled evolution there. But a messiah arose who gathered together 5 acolytes and called out to the Phoenix Force for deliverance. The PF arrived and broke the spell and evolution restarted and the demon lords were defeated. Transonic interprets this as meaning that Hope needs her 5 Lights (the 3 with Pixie are 3 of the 5). Unit admits that it didn't tell Hope that because its goal (which it claims is universal peace) isn't the same as hers. It's seen what happens when a Phoenix Messiah gets what she needs. In the spirit of scientific enquiry it's interested to see what happens if she doesn't. The 5 mutants understandably don't react well.

In the safehouse the 3 non-delirious mutants are still discussing how to get to the Moon. Even injured Psylocke is determined to get there. Maggie asks who do they know who has a spaceship. Betsy Braddock mentions a boy (Kid Gladiator) at Logan's School. Storm says that Abigail Brand of SWORD owes them for clearing up 'the mess with the prisoners' (this may refer to the SWORD mini-series). But Erik suggest instead that the technomorpher Danger might be able to turn into 1. But Ororo doesn't know where she's gone.

In Utopia the 4 X-teens panic. Velocidad wants them to go get the 4th Light Idie Okonkwo, but Transonic points out that the 5th Light Kenji Uedo is dead. And Pixie doesn't think she can 'port them to the Moon. Then Danger enters and blasts Pixie (we know that she is being controlled by Unit). She shoots Velocidad and Primal attacks her but she beats him. Lastly she encloses Pixie's head in an airless box. And all the time she's apologising.

The other 3 mutants can't contact Danger so they decide to go to Brand. But Psylocke is struck down by psychic emanations from the Moon. We see images from AvX#5 of Tony Stark in Phoenix-Buster armour flying to meet the Phoenix Force, and a big explosion.

Danger in the form of a plane leaves the 4 X-teens on Utopia's beach and returns to Unit. It tells her that he wiped their memories of this encounter and destroyed Hope's note. They'll wake believing their injuries happened when they escaped from Avengers Academy. When they do escape they see a light show on the Moon. And we see the end of AvX#5 with the 5 X-Men transformed by the PF and holding the unconscious body of the still-human Hope.
