The Longest Winter, Part 5 of 5

Synopsis

Winter Soldier #5 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Lucia von Bardas has seized control of Doctor Doom’s secret missile silo in the Latverian Alps, with the aid of the Red Ghost and the Soviet Zephyr agent Dmitri. Nick Fury is learning from the Winter Soldier and Black Widow that she gained the launch codes from her purchased Doombot. Now aboard a SHIELD spy carrier, Doctor Doom is repurposing Reed Richards’ teleportation rig to get them into the missile base. Bucky, Natasha and Doom materialize inside the base; while Doom and the Widow battle the Red Ghost’s super-apes and von Bardas, Bucky heads further in to stop Dmitri from launching the missiles. Pausing briefly to trick the Red Ghost into his intangible form so he can get by, the Winter Soldier faces the deadly sleeper agent he himself had trained near the silo. As Natasha defeats the apes and Doom shuts down von Bardas by destroying her cyborg eye, Bucky fights for his life against an enemy almost as good as he is. Finally a thrown knife kills Dmitri, and Bucky wonders why his foe did not even attempt to dodge. A fast survey reveals that the Red Ghost has escaped. A deal gives von Bardas to Fury, who agrees not to reveal the existence of Doom’s missile base so long as he dismantles it and keeps secret the fact that the Winter Soldier is still alive. They also discover that Dmitri had disobeyed orders and had never armed the nuclear warheads….

In the Bahamas, Col. Andre Rostov, the Red Barbarian, is living in luxury on the money he received for selling the Zephyr codes on the black market. Suddenly he is gunned down by a hidden sniper….

At a secure holding facility, Lucia von Bardas has one last bit of information for Jasper Sitwell, her interrogator. She was able to revive only two of the Zephyr sleeper agents; the third stasis tube was empty when she found it….

Review / Commentaries

Winter Soldier #5 Review by (May 23, 2012)
Review: Satisfying wrap-up to the series initial story arc also leads intot he next one and I can hardly wait. One question: who killed Rostov? Was the sniper in the palm tree Bucky or some other sinister character such as the last Zephyr agent? Hard to tell with art these days.

Comments: Col. Andre Rostov, the Red Barbarian, was the warden of the Gulag where Bucky was imprisoned in CAPTAIN AMERICA #616-619; the question is, is he the same character who battled Iron Man in TALES OF SUSPENSE #42 (in 1963)? If so it’s some sort of record for an obscure character lying in limbo before being revived.
