Battle Scars #5 Review by (January 7, 2020)

Review: The Secret History of Nick Fury? Sort of; at least it’s more convincing than the revelation that he was The Man in the Wall. It’s kinda sweet and I’d like to see more of Nia Jones if that’s possible; unfortunately it looks like Nick Jr’s origin is going to be quickly forgotten as they are going to get Nick Sr out of the way sooner or later and pretend that Nick Fury was always a black dude like in the movies. And the most gruesome moment in the miniseries—and a lot of other places: Ulanov casually mentions that he doesn’t see a resemblance between father and son—so he has Marcus’ eye cut out, after which he sees it. Yuck.

Comments: Bannered “Shattered Heroes.” Orion/Viktor Uvarov, head of Leviathan, was introduced in SECRET WARRIORS #12 and following as an enemy of SHIELD. Plot: Cullen Bunn, Matt Fraction, Chris Yost.

Battle Scars #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Thirty years ago, Nick Fury was working for the CIA alongside Agent Nia Jones and their successful mission against Leviathan led to a romance between the two—and Marcus Johnson was the result. When Nia discovered she was pregnant, she decided to keep the baby and she and Fury arranged for her to have a new identity far from the spy life, so that she would be safe from any of her old enemies. And she was—until three weeks ago when the secret was uncovered and given to the villain Orion, leader of the Russian terrorist organization Leviathan. Orion had Marcus’ mother killed to draw him out; the dying Orion wants the Infinity Formula to regain his youth and become immortal—and the formula was inherited by Marcus in his DNA. Marcus refuses to believe this and the two men fight and are then gassed and captured by Leviathan….

Cheese awakens from the punch Marcus gave him and deduces where Marcus has gone….

Marcus and Nick Fury awaken chained up in a lab; Viktor Ulanov, the aged Orion, has them prisoner. Marcus promises revenge against Orion who orders his man to cut out Marcus’ left eye. Fury and Marcus break free, Marcus falls down a shaft and Fury is recaptured. A blood transfusion is set up between Fury and Ulanov but it’s only a temporary measure as the serum in Fury’s body is old and breaking down whereas Marcus’ is still young and strong. A rejuvenated Orion dons his armor, ready to revive Leviathan as well….

Down in the sewer, Marcus overcomes and kills the two guards searching for him and, armed, he heads back to the lab to finish his mission….
