Meanwhile the Red Skull has been rescued from the sea by his men and is on his way to the Island of the Exiles, his elite military force. Assassins from the Exiles set a trap for Captain America outside SHIELD HQ and he has a rough time against them until Agent Thirteen comes to his aid. When the Sleeper destroys an industrial complex, Cap and Thirteen head out there in a SHIELD helicopter. They are shot down by a band of Exiles mounted on hover-seats and manage to parachute to safety, with Cap defeating the enemy on the ground. They stand in the path of the approaching Sleeper and Cap attacks it but his efforts are futile as the monster is too powerful. Suddenly the Sleeper slows down and Cap deduces that Thirteen is somehow transmitting her fear to the creature via the sonic key. As she becomes even more alarmed over Cap’s safety, the Sleeper weakens and fades out of existence; at the same moment the crystal key shatters. As Cap and Thirteen take comfort in each other’s arms, the Red Skull discovers Cap’s love, and determines to use this weakness to bring his downfall.

Captain America (1968 series) #102 Review by (September 23, 2025)

Review: Cap fights elite Nazi troops on his way to confront the Fourth Sleeper whose every move brings disaster. How can Cap possibly defeat it? Simple! He’s got a magic key that creates a magical force from Sharon’s nervousness that can destroy the monster! Does it make sense? Of course not but that the magic of comics in the 1960s. Comics lost something when they tried to explain everything, making the superhero world too serious starting in the 1990s! And the formidable monster is defeated and we’re only halfway through the story! Up next: Red Skull uses Cap’s love affair against him! But of course!

And there’s a cute bit mocking comic tropes: The Red Skull’s henchman explains the villain’s plan—to the Red Skull, who tells him he does not need to be reminded of his own plan! So it’s a good thing we were listening, right?

Comments: Part two of a four-part story. First appearance of the Exiles and their leaders (though some claim they were briefly in TALES OF SUSPENSE #41—an Iron Man story); even so, they are only seen in shadow standing behind the Red Skull in the final panel. Nick Fury jokes about the 1960s rock band the Lovin’ Spoonful. Cap employs a wrist-blaster created by Tony Stark. The letters page includes one by future comic book writer Doug Moench.
