Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #185 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

This issue opens with a short fourth wall break in which Daredevil lets the readers know that the narrator for this issue will be none other than Foggy Nelson, and asks us not to tell Foggy that Matt is Daredevil! Foggy is surprised at his office by Heather Glenn, who tells him she’s in deep trouble. She confides that she discovered her company is making bombs for some reason and he’s the only one who can help as she doesn’t want to tell Matt. Matt comes back just then, and Foggy pretends that he and Heather have dinner plans to catch up, while Matt secretly switches to Daredevil to tail them. Foggy and Heather go to see her board director, who claims no illegal activity and points out that Heather signed the purchase order, thereby making her complicit, if any wrongdoing were to be found. Foggy advises Heather to head straight home and he’ll try to sort things out.

Foggy visits various government agencies in order to get to the bottom of things legally, but encounters a mile of red tape that gets him nowhere. Foggy then tries less reputable sources of information and scours every pool hall and shady bar he can find. He eventually learns from one thug that the bombs are being used for an upcoming heist, before said thug knocks Foggy out cold! Foggy is brought before Eric Slaughter and pretends to be a street tough named “Guts” Nelson looking to get in on the operation. Slaughter tells his men to shoot Foggy but before they can, Daredevil shuts out the lights and stealthily takes out all the goons in the dark! He slips back out before the lights come on, making it look like Foggy took out the entire room himself! This impresses Turk, who decides that he now wants to work for Foggy, causing Matt perched outside to facepalm!

Turk takes Foggy to see the Kingpin, while Daredevil overhears that the Kingpin is the one using the bombs for a heist going on right then at the pier. Daredevil quickly makes his way to the pier to intercept the heist, while Turk suggests that Foggy be the Kingpin’s new hitman! Daredevil takes on the Kingpin’s men, making Kingpin aware of his involvement, and Foggy bluffs that Daredevil is there on his orders! In the scuffle, Daredevil is knocked into the river and blasted by the radioactive isotope that Kingpin’s men were trying to steal. He resurfaces and finishes off Kingpin’s men, and tells Fisk over the walkie-talkie not to mess with Guts Nelson! This gives Foggy the courage to stand up to Fisk, and convince him to wait until Monday to discuss his employment, though not without almost getting strangled. Finally, Foggy tricks Turk into getting on a plane to Chicago, laughing to himself as the plane takes off!

Daredevil (1964 series) #185 Review by (May 21, 2025)

Review: This is probably the most overtly funny issue in Miller’s entire run! This issue is told from Foggy’s point of view, and even opens with a little fourth wall break by Matt explaining the whole deal, and asking us not to tell Foggy he’s Daredevil! Foggy’s narration is very entertaining, as he’s clearly trying to sound like a tough film noir style detective, and the art and presentation reflect that as well. Speaking of the art, Klaus Janson takes over as the full artist this issue, penciling and inking, and he does such a good job with Miller’s layouts that it’s practically impossible to tell the difference! There are countless funny moments throughout this issue, with many of them a result of the contrast between Foggy’s gritty, crafty narration and the more awkward and bumbling way he’s actually going about things! For example, Daredevil taking out a room full of guys in the dark and making it look like Foggy did it, impressing Turk (which just causes Matt to facepalm). Through Daredevil’s secret help, Foggy’s even able to stand up to the Kingpin, even blowing smoke right in the man’s face!

And herein lies the only snag in an otherwise well-crafted and extremely entertaining issue. Turk takes Foggy to see the Kingpin (to suggest that Foggy be Fisk’s new hitman, no less). Thing is, only a few issues ago, Fisk contracted Elektra to kill Foggy, so he undoubtedly knows what Foggy looks like. There’s no reason Fisk shouldn’t immediately recognize him and either throw him out or have him killed. One could maybe argue that Foggy was so beneath Fisk’s notice that he wouldn’t recognize him, but Kingpin is certainly not the type to overlook details like that. He’s too meticulous. Even in spite of that little plot hole, this is such a fun, unique issue within Miller’s Daredevil that it’s difficult to care too much. Foggy even gets the last laugh by tricking Turk into taking a plane to Chicago! This issue is further proof that Daredevil comics can be funny when written well, and don’t always have to be doom and gloom (something that Mark Waid will take to heart decades from this point).

Comments: Klaus Janson takes over as penciller this issue, in addition to inker and colorist.
