Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #193 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Late at night, Daredevil stops by the local Armory to check in on a Sargeant friend of his. He finds the Sarge bleeding out from a gunshot wound, having just tried to stop a robbery. He reveals that men disguised as soldiers ransacked the place and stole a couple cases of new anti-tank missiles called Dragons! Not only that, they took Sarge’s prized gun given to him by his father, “Bitsy.” Sarge tries to tell Daredevil once more of how that very gun saved his life, as Daredevil hears his heartbeat slow and finally stop. Outside, after loading the missiles into a truck, the leader of the heist drives off without his men! Daredevil leaps down and takes out the robbers, leaving one guy to interrogate. The last guy tells Daredevil that the exceptionally tall man who planned the job and just drove off is named Carmine Pesca and that he’s planning to use the missiles somehow to rob a cruise ship called the S.S. Madagascar that’s leaving the following morning.

Two days later, Matt finds himself aboard the S.S. Madagascar so that he can hopefully foil the robbery attempt. Matt learns from another attendee that Pesca is apparently in the diamond business and brought quite a lot of equipment with him in his room. Matt notices as Pesca is slapped by an equally tall woman before walking off. He introduces himself and learns that the very tall woman is named Willow, and she’s the magician hired to be the main entertainment for the cruise. She asks Matt to be the guest for her show that night, and later Matt finds himself acting as the participant for one of her tricks. She straps a harness and pulley around Matt which lifts him high into the air behind the curtain, making it look to the audience as if he disappeared! After the show, she shows Matt how her tricks were done, demonstrating the pulley and revealing she used a hologram projector to make it look like she made an elephant appear.

Later that night, Daredevil decides to surveil Pesca some more, when suddenly one of the stolen missiles comes careening at the ship, striking the main radio tower! The reverberating radar frequencies end up heavily messing with Daredevil’s own radar, leaving him truly blind! Just after, a submarine rises out of the distance and demands the diamonds stored on board be transferred to them, without any hassle. To preserve the safety of the passengers, the Captain of the ship agrees. Meanwhile, Daredevil uses an axe to smash the radar dish, solving his radar issue. However, the dish starts falling towards Pesca and Daredevil just manages to knock it out of the way in time. Daredevil interrogates Pesca and learns that he’s an actor that Willow hired to act as her double for one of her tricks!

Meanwhile, Willow uses the same pulley system as earlier to hoist the diamonds to her and her partners, while revealing that the submarine was just a hologram all along. Daredevil arrives to discover her scheme, and her two associates rush him. Daredevil takes them out without much hassle, leaving just him and Willow. She pulls the Sarge’s gun Bitsy on Daredevil, who tries to warn her that the gun doesn’t work. Willow doesn’t believe Daredevil and pulls the trigger, causing the gun to backfire and explode in her hand! Daredevil then explains the real story of how that gun saved the Sarge’s life. In Vietnam, he was rushed by a foreign solider with a grenade. The grenade went off prematurely, lodging a piece of shrapnel in the gun barrel and saving his life. Since then, he never fired it and kept it around as a good luck charm. At least, until Willow came along…

Review / Commentaries

Daredevil (1964 series) #193 Review by (July 30, 2025)

Review: Here we have a simple one-off issue by Larry Hama, in which Daredevil foils a robbery on a cruise ship. It’s an okay issue, though it somehow manages to feel both streamlined and padded with unnecessary scenes at the same time. The issue begins with Daredevil finding his Sargeant friend (unnamed, and who’s never been mentioned before or since) dying after the armory was robbed and several new missiles were stolen, along with his prized gun, the eponymous “Bitsy.” This leads Daredevil to a cruise ship where the missiles are to be used for a robbery, with no mention of how he actually gets there (a bit of the aforementioned streamlining). He meets Willow, the magician for the cruise and the “twist” that she ends up being the one responsible is pretty obvious. She uses her magician tricks to fake an attack by robbers with a hologram of a submarine but also somehow managed to have shot one of the missiles from said submarine, which makes absolutely no sense. The issue just glides past the absurdity. Her motivations beyond simple petty theft aren’t really made clear and she gets her comeuppance when the stolen “Bitsy” explodes in her hand (justifying the title). The art is still pretty good, and the best parts of the issue are when the story of how Bitsy saved the Sarge’s life is told, with the memories displayed as rough penciling behind the characters. Overall, a solid, if unspectacular issue with a couple of logical and narrative oddities.

Comments: This is the only issue of Daredevil written by Larry Hama.
