Invincible Iron Man #30 Review by (May 15, 2020)
RobFJ - I forgot to set this Comments as by T Vernon.

Comments: The sentient armor’s absence here coincides with his appearance in NEW WARRIORS (1999 series) #9; the armor returns in issues #46-48 of this title. Issue ends with a farewell to artist Sean Chen.

Review: A moving conclusion to the story arc as the sentient Armor does indeed learn how to be an Avenger—by giving its life for another. And there’s a lot of excitement with Tony in only a loin cloth trying to defeat one of his armors. It would have been nice if this were extended for another issue so we could see the Armor playing at being Iron Man on an Avengers exploit but we can’t have everything.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Invincible Iron Man #30 Synopsis by T Vernon
The sentient Armor has held Tony Stark prisoner on a remote island for a week, tied to a tree while it demands he consent to becoming one with it. [Brief interlude: Rumiko Fujikawa has a nightmare that Tony is in danger.] It then accidentally shoots Tony in the head then soliloquizes about how it tried to learn about emotions and insists it did everything out of love; Tony is not quite dead and suggests jealousy or envy instead. The monster is about to finish the job when it receives an Avengers distress call and sees this as its chance to show the world it doesn’t need Tony Stark to be Iron Man. When the Armor is gone, Tony manages to free himself and, recalling survival skills learned from Steve Rogers, he mans up and hunts a small animal for food then sets out preparing for when his tormentor returns…

…and return it does, searching the island for Tony. Tony springs a series of traps, hoping that one thing or another will damage his foe but nothing works. The Armor removes its visor, telling Tony that all it needs is some synthetic skin and no one will miss Tony Stark. And then Tony suffers a massive heart attack so the Armor finishes this the only way it can…by ripping out its own heart for Tony to use as a pacemaker. The Armor then dies “like a man.” Tony repairs his watch to signal for help and buries the Armor: “Here lies Iron Man, Avenger.”
