Synopsis

Iron Man: Hypervelocity (2007 series) #3 synopsis by reviewer T Vernon
Rating: 4.5 stars

As Tony Stark lies wounded in a SHIELD surgical theater, the armor piloted by Tony Stark 2.0 drives a “borrowed” Honda on his mission; having recognized the rail gun that wounded him, Tony 2.0 also knows the weapon maker who supplied it to the mysterious bad guys. He knows the maker will be at a mecha party tonight and intends to meet him there. As he drives, various issues pass through Tony 2.0’s mind, mostly about shortcomings in his design and programming….

Aboard the SHIELD Assault Carrier Samuel Sawyer, Major Tom Aramaki of the SHIELD Special Response Team Alpha, informally known as the Capekillers, reviews the resources they have at hand for hunting down the supposedly rogue Iron Man armor, while trying to explain it to a US Senator….

In motion, Iron Man’s right repulsor suddenly discharges, wrecking the car which careens off the road and into the sea. The latex-clad goth chick appears, introducing herself as Absynthe, virtual avatar of the sentient intrusionware which has invaded his systems. She was deposited in the armor via the railgun attack and is now writing herself over the armor’s operating code, intending to delete him totally from the processors; visually this resembles her biting and chewing up an Iron Man doll. At the ocean’s bottom, Tony 2.0 and the armor swim away and head toward the mecha party being held aboard a sunken ship. Wearing a disguise made from Honda parts and other stuff, Iron Man infiltrates the party. Meanwhile, Absynthe laughs about the trap he has just walked into….

Iron Man: Hypervelocity (2007 series) #3 Review by (July 1, 2022)
Comments: First appearance of SHIELD Assault Carrier Samuel Sawyer, named after Sgt. Fury’s commanding officer, as seen in SGT FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS #1 onward.

Review: And with this issue we begin to add some texture. Story includes Tony Stark 2.0’s top 5 positives about no longer possessing an organic human body, Tony’s practice of paperclipping i.e. reverse engineering tech from his enemies to improve his own creations, a full accounting of SHIELD resources. Especially interesting is SHIELD Agents’ use of drugs to be able to handle the pressures of the job including lack of sleep and the suppression of sexual urges to keep their minds on the job. This has to take a toll and maybe another writer will go into it more deeply (unless someone already has). And so in this issue we get Iron Man driving a cool car but also the evil virus Absynthe’s scheme while revealing the existence of the mecha underground and their undersea raves. And Tony 2.0 gives us a list of his own shortcomings, making it clear that sentient tech has a clearer view of some things than their human creators do. And it’s not often that a superhero comic features a near-total lack of human beings among the characters.
