Invaders, The #9 Review by (March 16, 2020)

Review: A big battle scene, Torch’s concern for Namor that might result in a mercy-killing, the return of Spitfire, the betrayal of Machan, and the (possibly) ultimate sacrifice of Cap and Bucky. A lot going on and an exchange between Namor and Tommy Machan that helps clear up any confusing bits in the Machan history. Okay by me.

Comments: Carlos Magno drew the modern scenes while Butch Guice did the wartime episodes.

Invaders, The #9 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Namor the Sub-Mariner is taking steps to battle the surface world, commanding Roman Peterson to gather the troops for their upcoming attack. Machan opposes Namor’s plan to attack Roxxon but Namor insists he is king…

Germany 1942: The Invaders attack German forces to prepare the way for a major offensive. Namor goes berserk, hurling a ruined tank at a house; Spitfire uses her super-speed to rescue an old man and a young girl from the place before the projectile hits. She then calls Namor an idiot for endangering the lives they are supposed to be saving….

In the present day, Captain America, Human Torch (now with an Iron body), and Toro meet with Jacqueline “Spitfire” Falsworth in London where she shows them what British Intelligence has discovered about Namor’s plans and they realize he is going to attack a fleet of Roxxon ships….

Soon, Namor’s troops, including Tiger Shark and Orka, are attacking Roxxon’s ships and Namor is shocked to see the soldiers killing crew when he wanted to save them with the Serpent Crown; Machan tells him he did order the atrocities. The Invaders arrive: Cap, Torch, Toro, and Spitfire and there is a battle. Namor seizes Toro and threatens to kill him if Torch doesn’t back off. Torch tries to reason with Namor but he is overruled by Machan’s voice in Namor’s head. Namor hurls Toro into the water and flies off, his soldiers going with him. He returns to Atlantis, fighting Machan’s voice in his head; he finds himself back in the war, talking to Tommy Machan who reveals he has turned into a separate entity but not strong enough to overcome Namor’s control. He shows Namor that young Roman Peterson is also in his head—and that with the Serpent Crown Machan is in control. He knocks Namor out and Peterson seizes the crown and makes off with it….

Black Panther, Cap, and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier are discussing the Genus formula and its ability to change a recipient’s species. And they realize that there is now only one way to stop Namor. So, as Roxxon prepares to invade Atlantis, Steve and Bucky have T’Challa transform them into water-breathers….
