Synopsis
The distressed Detroit neighborhood of Highland Park is stunned to find the Avengers arriving and standing around the area. Spokesman Luke Cage explains to the media that it is similar to a program instituted in New York City: an increased police presence in one dangerous neighborhood drives out the criminals, and even when police move on to another area, the crime rate stays down. This is Cage’s contribution to the Avengers: impact superheroing. Suddenly the team is called away by a summons from SHIELD Director Maria Hill. As they head north in the Quinjet, Hill fills them in on the threat: a powerful humanoid of undetermined origin has devastated a small town in Alaska and is cutting a swath through Canada, and the military and Alpha Flight were helpless to stop it (last issue). As the monster moves across Lake Erie to enter the United States at Cleveland, Captain America summons Ms. Marvel to action; the X-Men and Fantastic Four are unavailable. Cap requests the aid of SHIELD Agent Daisy Johnson and Hill agrees, against her wishes. As Cap tries to contact the Sentry, who is having one of his bad days, Iron Man goes down to try peaceful contact with the menace. As the glowing figure at the center of a whirlwind of fire approaches, it halts when Iron Man introduces himself. The figure responds by awkwardly forcing out its name, "Michael," and confirming that it is human. But suddenly the overzealous Ms. Marvel arrives to snatch up Michael and hoist him high into the atmosphere; when she tries to absorb his energy, it unleashes a blast that throws Tony and the Quinjet through the sky—and leaves a flaming Carol shocked and amazed at the power she now possesses—she is Binary again….
