New Avengers #13 Review by (October 29, 2013)
Despite what he said to Matt Murdoch in #11, Captain America here agrees with what Madame Hydra said last issue, that Silver Samurai was illegally kidnapped by SHIELD. On hearing that the Avengers are here to investigate that, it is SS who initiates the battle by turning on the Hand ninjas. SS greets Spider-Woman as Jessica here, but I think he only knows her from when he was working with MH/Viper and MH thought she was SW's mother, as I mentioned last issue. But SW uses this connection to convince SS to let her take wanted terrorist MH back to the US. Actually of course SW wants the opportunity to release MH, as she agreed last issue. Cap is certain MH escaped drowning in the ocean, despite being bound. SW must also have expected this. Ronin/Echo responds to Luke Cage and Cap, but 'ignores' Spider-Man and Iron Man because she can't read their lips through their masks. Cap knows who she is because he recruited her in #11. So just before she unmasks he helps by repeating Iron Man's questions to her.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

New Avengers #13 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

At the Harada Fortress in Osaka, the Avengers are in a confrontation with the Silver Samurai, who has been approached to lead the crime syndicate, and the assassin’s guild known as The Hand. The Samurai wants answers as to why he was kidnapped by SHIELD and taken to America, the Harada want the Avengers destroyed, and Captain America is seeking a peaceful surrender. As The Hand begins an attack, Iron Man flattens them all with a concussion blast. The conversation turns tense as Cap wants the Samurai to know that a rogue element in SHIELD was responsible for his abduction while the warrior expresses skepticism and intends to publicize the incident. As the authorities are on their way, Silver Samurai plans to tell them that he took out The Hand while the Avengers make their getaway in the Quinjet with the captive Madame Hydra. On their way back to America, Iron Man tells Cap that the Avengers will have to make a public announcement, revealing their recent reorganization, to counter the Silver Samurai’s statements. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is curious about the identity of the masked Ronin, who ignores him. The captive Madame Hydra silently orders Spider-Woman to rescue her, and the traitorous heroine presses the emergency override to the hatch door, launching the villainess out over the ocean. But an unexpected event happens: Captain America stands up just as this is done and he is also ejected. Spider-Woman uses her newly-acquired flight ability to go to his rescue but Cap is too heavy for her. Ronin takes the controls of the jet and Iron Man rockets out and carries his teammates to safety. There is no sign of Madame Hydra, and several Avengers are skeptical of Spider-woman’s claim that it was an accident….

Back at Avengers Tower, Ronin announces plans to return to Japan to keep and eye on The Hand, which is now led by Elektra Nachios. Iron Man is curious as to how Ronin could fly the Quinjet and the masked warrior reveals the ability to mimic any activity once it is witnessed. Who is this mysterious hero with photographic reflexes but no ability to understand what Iron Man or Spider-Man is saying? Ronin unmasks to reveal she is Maya LopezEcho—the deaf associate of Daredevil.

Epilogue: some time later, as Jessica Drew is quietly eating breakfast, Captain America enters and aks who she is really working for….
