Rating: 4 stars

Osaka, Japan: a fearsome armored warrior known as Ronin defeats several gangster with spinning nunchakus, demanding to know where to find the headquarters of The Hand….

Yesterday, Steve Rogers met Matt Murdock in Central Park to tell him that Kenuichio Harada, the Silver Samurai, was one of the prisoners to escape from the Vault recently (issues #1-6). He was then smuggled out of the country by air to Japan. Matt believes it was the work of the Yashida Clan, a powerful but struggling yakuza gang who need the powerful Silver Samurai to unite the splintered group and provide a power base for The Hand. Steve asked for Matt’s help as Daredevil. Matt declined; since his identity was publicized too many criminals and Federal lawmen are hunting for him to risk endangering the Avengers by association. Steve reveals that he had once abandoned his Captain America identity for Nomad….

Ronin enters the secret compound of the Yashida Clan and witnesses yakuza members presenting Kenuichio Harada with his Silver Samurai outfit….and then Madame Hydra arrives and kisses Harada….

Matt told Steve that there was someone who had all the knowledge Daredevil possessed of the Japanese Underworld, including fighting ability…. Steve headed over to contact Matt’s candidate for the job of aiding the Avengers….

Ronin is caught by Hand assassins and fights them to escape from the compound. Ronin soon arrives at Tony Stark’s penthouse apartment downtown where the Avengers are waiting. The mysterious warrior reveals that Harada is in the Yashida fortress…but so is Hydra. Ronin then apologizes for failing them…as The Hand assassins arrive to battle the Avengers….

Silver Samurai is the illegitimate brother of Mariko, the deceased love of Wolverine. He became leader of Clan Yashida after she died. I don't think the Hand connection was seen in this period. But this issue says the Clan splintered after he quit. I'm not sure when that was. Cap says Silver Samurai was in the Raft prison because of crimes involving Sunfire. But the only time I know that Samurai and Sunfire were together before this was as heroes in the Big Hero 6 limited series. And Madame Hydra will claim next issue that SS had really been put in the Raft illegally by SHIELD. When CA goes to recruit Ronin, it's clearly (in hind-sight) a woman, who we will later learn is Maya Lopez (Echo). Steve is worried about her past connection to Wilson Fisk (Kingpin). She was brought up by him and initially sent against Daredevil. Madame Hydra seems to have been running a double life as leader of Hydra and as the independent anarchist Viper. (Or maybe the writers can't keep straight which one she's supposed to be these days.) She was last MH in Daredevil (1998) #61/64. She was then Viper as a member of the Hellfire Club in some X-Men issues ranging from Uncanny XM #448 to the pre-HoM Excalibur #13.

Spider-Woman at this time was the Skrull imposter Veranke. Daredevil initially thinks Captain America has come to ask him again to join the Avengers, and pre-emptively turns him down again as he did in #3 after being involved in the Vault breakout. Cap says he came seeking Matt's knowledge of all things Japanese because Wolverine won't be available for the immediate future. At the time of this issue House of M was still running. The Official Index puts this story arc after HoM, and suggests Logan is probably with the other X-Men in protective custody after HoM in XM#177. He'll be back in #14. Clan Yashida *is* a Yakuza gang, although Mariko Yashida tried to reform it after her father Shingen's death. During Shingen's rule the Clan seemed to be intimately connected with the Hand.
