Breakout—Part Six

Synopsis

New Avengers #6 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars
The Avengers find themselves surrounded by SHIELD agents led by Yelena Belova (the second Black Widow). She orders them killed but her men refuse to shoot Captain America. Belova opens fire herself and Wolverine jumps her; only Cap throwing his shield at Logan’s head stops him from killing her. Spider-Woman orders the SHIELD agents to stand down while Iron Man uses a magnetic force to disarm them. Spider-Woman questions Belova about her obviously illegal activities but the agent does not answer. Jessica threatens her and she responds "I work for the same people you work for." Before they can unravel that enigmatic statement, a recovered Sauron unleashes a blast of flame that catches Belova point blank. The Avengers beat down the reptilian villain and set out to find the rogue agents’ base and hitch a ride out of the Savage Land. What they discover is a site where natives are being forced to mine vibranium for constructing illegal super-weapons. Cap leads the team into an assault on the base but they are rudely interrupted by the arrival of missiles which destroy the area. The heroes are protected by Iron Man’s repulsor field. The Helicarrier arrives and Maria Hill tells the Avengers that they had the situation under control and the heroes had been told to stay out of it. Later, Tony reveals that his analysis of SHIELD’s files on the escaped villains shows they had been tampered with, that several prisoners were officially listed as dead. The group plans to pursue the investigation, and Tony offers Wolverine a position on the team, justifying it to Cap as filling the need for a more ruthless member of the team who can go where the others cannot. In an epilogue, a critically burned Yelena Belova is visited in the hospital by her superior who offers her a chance at revenge….

Belova is eventually revealed to be working for Hydra.

New Avengers #6 Review by (June 10, 2013)
Another misleading Sentry appearance on the cover. He's still not on the team, and this time he's not even in the book. On the face of it Yelena Belova is just reminding Jessica Drew that they both work for SHIELD. As it turns out later, she's probably reminding her that they both secretly work for Hydra. I don't think she knows that Spider-Woman is really a Skrull imposter. Belova will return in Annual #1 (2006), where Hydra will have transplanted her mind into a Super-Adaptoid. With the addition of Wolverine we now have 6 of the 7 members on the cover of #1. The next arc will complete the roster with Sentry.
