To Reach Eternity

Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #54 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

As the day begins in New York, deejay Chucky Diamond wakes everyone up by pointing them to heaven on Earth: Asgard hovering over New York City. As Chucky frames a call-in discussion on gods, Malik goes to work as a bus driver, covering his morning route. He drops off Sister Mary at the Catholic hospital where she ministers as a nurse. Mary learns that Donny Jennings has taken a turn for the worse and tries to comfort his mother…who rejects Mary’s pious mouthings, listing all of the tragedies that have shaped her life and concluding in anger that there is no God….

At the offices of the World Vigilance Organization, director Roxanne Perez receives a call from their landlord demanding payment, which the non-profit agency can’t meet. She explains to staff member T’Ambo, an African refugee himself and he offers to work without pay while they strive to free his brother too. Though she is an atheist, she promises that if the gods can find her the money she will believe….

Nearby, Malik’s bus is boarded by a pair of thugs who rob the passengers, one of them holding a gun to Malik’s head as incentive. As the situation veers out of control, Hogun and Balder crash into the vehicle, disarming (literally, one crook loses an arm) the bad guys and overpowering them….

At the hospital, Donny’s mother apologizes to Sister Mary for her remarks, informing her that Donny has died. As Mary offers comfort, an amazing thing happens. Lady Sif arrives at the hospital with Neffethesk the healer, distributing potions an elixirs that can cure every disease there….

At the WVO office, Roxanne and T’Ambo are surprised when Thor enters, leading a group of African refugees, including T’Ambo’s brother. Thor explains that he usually works through the governing body of any sovereign land but the dictator in question was a tyrant so Thor overthrew him. Roxanne questions his right to do that but Thor merely sees it as justice writ large….

At the hospital, Sister Mary ponders out loud that the Asgardians are indeed gods which draws a rebuke from the priest….

Malik ends his work for the day, pondering what had nearly happened to him….

Roxanne, Malik, and Sister Mary, along with many, many others, gather at the Church of Asgard….

Thor (1998 series) #54 Review by (May 20, 2026)

Review: And here we see the effect of Thor’s reign on the ordinary citizen and it is overwhelming. Asgard is solving everyone’s problems. This is some heady stuff, as some of these issues are seriously debated within the major religious traditions. At least they don’t bring up the usual, “How does the true existence of the Norse Gods affect the current religions?” a question that has never been asked in real life and never will, no matter how much thought a comic book writer wants to put into it. Most interesting point: Roxanne questions Thor’s right to decide whether a ruler is a tyrant. While she is helping people escape from said tyrant’s country. I’m sure she has denounced the man’s administration more than once so why is Thor making the same determination somehow unjust or unfair? Who decides what constitutes justice? Roxanne seems to think a god shouldn’t be doing it so who should? A majority of politicians who she agrees with? Like that’s better? It all comes down to the question of what is the origin of morality? A bigger question that we (or Dan Jurgens) can decide here. Otherwise this was a great issue, if touching on more than a comic book could (or should) deal with.

Comments: Deejay Chucky Diamond was seen previously in issue #5. Neffethesk was introduced in issue #29. Apparently, the Asgardians have no cure for cancer as Captain Mar-Vell and Jane Foster, not to mention Titania, suffered greatly even in the sight of Asgard.
