Winter Soldier #1 Review by (June 18, 2019)

Review: A good premise for a series about the Winter Soldier, having him pay his redemption forward by aiding others trapped in lives of crime or terror, abandons that premise almost immediately to center on a single (and singular) client: RJ, a kid groomed to be the new Winter Soldier. While I was looking forward to seeing a series of single issue stories focusing on a variety adventures (like THE IMMORTAL HULK), I'll give a continuous narrative centering on the main character and his personal trials (again like THE IMMORTAL HULK) a chance to impress me. Rod Reis' art, painted with ink highlights, is offbeat but suits the series beautifully. Pretty good start to the new Bucky title. And the best part? They've completely jettisoned the “Man in the Wall” sci-fi nonsense that came out of the ORIGINAL SIN event!

Comments: First brief appearance of RJ.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Winter Soldier #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Chicago: a trio of crooked cops are plotting to rob a band of drug dealers under cover of a legitimate police raid. One of the men, Arthur Hayes has had second thoughts and contacted the Winter Soldier; Bucky meets with Hayes to prepare him for his disappearance into a new life. Hayes' partners show up unexpectedly at his door and Bucky fights them, though one has the power to create some sort of ectoplasmic tentacles. When a gang of armed men arrive, Bucky grabs Hayes and crashes through a window and they get away by motorcycle....

At his secret hideout in Shelbyville, Indiana, Bucky has repairs made to his damaged bionic arm by Tony Stark; Sharon Carter aids Bucky in vetting the requests for help while Bucky makes the final decisions. His HQ is in Shelbyville as it is centrally located in the US and also because it's where he grew up. He gets a call for help from a former client and heads out to meet the fellow at a bar in Wisconsin. Terry, a former Hydra torturer, is having a difficult time fitting into his new life but when he casually mentions that he has been in contact with his old girlfriend, Bucky barely has time to react before a Hydra assassin fires through the windows, killing Terry. Bucky pursues but he is immediately shot in the chest multiple times, a vest protecting him but he is still knocked on his back. He looks up to see his assailant—and it's boy (RJ) who looks just like the young Bucky Barnes....
